I Tried Personalized Hair Care And Here’s How It Went

Personalized hair care is a great idea. Everyone is different so why should we all use the same hair products? I was hesitant at first because of the price, but after I finished my last bottle of store-bought shampoo with less than stellar results, I decided to invest in my hair care.

Consultation Quiz

The first step toward getting your personalized Prose Hair formula is an in-depth consultation quiz. It asked me questions like what type of curl do I have, thickness, length, how much hair loss I typically experience, even my zip code, which tells them the weather conditions my hair is exposed to. When I finished I was excited to try out my new products.

The Price

Prose is the least expensive personalized hair care company, and it’s still steep.  A regular bottle of shampoo and conditioner is around seven bucks each and Prose is twenty-five bucks a bottle which is half the size of a store brand. That’s a large price disparity for less product. If you don’t have a major issue with the products you’re using now, I wouldn’t try personalized hair care. Depending on how much hair you have, you’ll need a refill every three months, and the expense adds up quickly. But if you’re like me and have a lot of hair issues that aren’t being resolved with existing retail brands, this could an option you should consider.

Fragrance- Free

During your consultation, you’ll get to choose what scent you want your products to be. They have a fragrance free option, which was great for me because many hair products irritate my sensitive skin.  They also offer a pomegranate and floral scent.

Weekly Hair Mask

The hair care set comes with a hair mask that is supposed to be used once a week before a wash. On the directions, it says to soak your hair first and then put it in your hair for at least fifteen minutes before washing it. The formula is super light and doesn’t weigh my hair down. I had been struggling with hair loss prior to receiving Prose and I hoped the mask would strengthen my roots but it didn’t. It gives my hair a bit of volume the day I put it in but that’s about all it does.

Store Bought Vs. Prose Hair

For me, store-bought products are either hit or miss. I like the brands OGX and Shea Moisture, but my curly hair is fine and although I liked what was in their products, weren’t made for my fine hair. If products at your local store work for your hair type, don’t bother trying personalized hair care. It’s not significantly different than other brands but it’s a lifesaver if you’re struggling to find the right products for your hair.

Final Thoughts

The jury is still out on whether spending ninety bucks on three eight-ounce bottles of the product is worth it. For me, it is because prior to Prose I was constantly looking for new products that fit my hair type. My split ends are gone and I no longer have irritation around my hairline. However, if you don’t have problems with the products you buy from the store, don’t bother trying personalized hair care. It’s super expensive and if a cheaper option is open to you, go for it! Who wants to spend a hundred bucks unnecessarily? Not me.

Are you thinking about trying personalized hair care? It could be the best thing you’ve ever done or a total waste, depending on your hair type. Have fun taking the consultation quiz, and let us know in the comments what you thought of your formula!
