How To Organize Your Dorm Closet

It’s almost time to move back into your college dorm and with all of the new clothes you got for Christmas, you’re wondering how you’re going to make it all fit. Let’s be honest… the closet space was already getting pretty tight before you headed home for break! Here’s a 10 step guide to how to organize your dorm closet and how to make it feel bigger!

1. Only bring the clothes that are in season.

Winter clothes take up enough space with their thick fabric. Mixing in clothes you know you won’t be wearing for a few months isn’t making things any better. To save space, only bring clothes that you know you will wear this chilly season. You can switch them out to prep for the warmer weather during spring break!

2. Add in an extra clothing rack.

This hanging clothing rack is a college life saver for obvious reasons. It doubles your closet space with little-to-no effort.

3. Invest in velvet hangers.

College is all about sticking to a low budget, but velvet hangers are so worth the price tag. Not only are they thinner in size than most plastic hangers but the material also prevents your clothes from falling off. A closet with clothes on the ground instantly makes it appear smaller and cluttered. Prevent that and maximize space for clothes with thin velvet hangers!

4. Use soda can tabs to create double clothing hangers.

Back to the college budget! This hack will work regardless of the kind of hangers you have. Stock up on soda can tabs and place them through the hook of your clothing hanger to allow another hanger to hang onto it. Brilliant.

5. Scout for multi-hook hangers.

Am I the only one that is bothered by how much space all of my gym and lounge tank tops take up in my dorm closet, despite how small and thin they are? This multi-hook hanger is the perfect solution. It’s also great for belts and scarves! This is a genius way of how to organize your dorm closet!

6. Purchase a multi-tier pant hanger.

If you’re one to hang your pants, utilize multi-tier trouser hangers to save space by hanging more pants on one hanger.

7. Don’t hang things that can be folded and stored in a drawer.

At the start of semester, I used to hang all of my basic university tees. As I began to acquire more shirts and my closet was getting tighter, I resorted to folding them, instead, and they’re doing just fine.

8. Choose the best way to organize your shoes.

Every college is different. If your dorm closet has a door, get over-the-door shoe storage to maximize the amount of space for clothes in the closet. If you don’t have a door and your closet is wide enough, purchase a thin shoe organizer that hangs over the clothing rod.

9. Utilize command hooks.

Take advantage of any open wall or door space. Command hooks hold a surprising amount of weight and are perfect for purses, coats, towels, hats, and more. This is a great tip for  how to organize your dorm closet.

10. Add in cute cubbies if space allows.

Cubbies are great to store at the top or bottom of your closet. It makes you look organized when maybe the inside of the cubby is quite the opposite (guilty)!
