How To Get The Perfect Winged Eyeliner Every Time

Is it just me or is getting the perfect wing really hard? I never felt like I could find the perfect liquid eyeliner either. Some of the liquid liners I found had too loose of a tip, making it impossible to get the wing that I wanted. I have really wanted to do the wings after watching Euphoria, where they have the most iconic makeup looks. Anyways, I found the best liquid eyeliners and great techniques to get you that perfect wing. If you mess up, don’t worry…grab some petroleum jelly or clear lip gloss and erase the smudge.

Three Types of Eyeliners

1. Liquid

  • Most difficult to use
  • Brush applicator
  • Gives bold finish
  • Can be messy
  • Best for cat eyes and more dramatic looks
  • For best control, put it in the fridge for about 10 minutes. The applicator will harder making it easier to use.

2. Gel

  • Use with an angled brush, fine tip brush, or pencil eyeliner
  • Gives bold finish
  • Can be messy
  • Best for smokey eyes
  • Mostly used by professional makeup artists

3. Pencil

  • Most commonly used
  • Softer finish
  • More control
  • Best for beginners
  • Need to sharpen like other pencils…if you don’t sharpen well enough, it doesn’t give you a smooth-straight line
  • Best if in a hurry

Best Techniques For The Wing

1. Angled eyeliner brush

This is probably the easiest technique.

  1. Go buy an angled brush and an eyeliner pot.
  2. Dip your brush into the pot and place it on the outer edge of your eye, making an angle with your temples.
  3. Place that brush over the line you just drew in an inverted way to make the upper angle of the wing.
  4. Color in the space and make sure to extend the liner to the inner top corner of your eye.

2. Free hand

You definitely will need some practice for the free hand, especially if you don’t have steady hands. Once you get the hang of this one, it is like second nature to put it on.

These eye makeup tips are going to have your eyes standing out in no time at all! Here are some of the best tips for you to try!

  1. Rest your elbow on a flat surface to ensure your hand will be steady. You will have maximum control of your hand.
  2. Take your eyeliner and draw a line on the eye’s outer edge, creating an angle with your eyebrows. Make it as long you want.
  3. Put the pencil where the line ends and draw a line that goes inward with a subtle curve. Extend that line to the inner corner of your eye. If you can’t do one line, stop halfway into your upper lash line and then keep going until you hit the inner corner. If you have smaller eyes, go for thin lines. If you have bigger, go for thicker lines.
  4. Fill in the gap.

3. Tape

Using scotch tape or cellophane will give you a perfect wing.

  1. Cute a piece of tape that is 2 centimeters long. Stick it on the outer edge of your eye and angle it how you want your wing to be.
  2. Draw along the edge, while using the tape as guidance. Feel free to draw all over the tape. But if you do use it as guidance, it will help you learn to do it yourself.
  3. Extend the line to the inner corner of your eye.

Yes, you can get a perfect wing by using a spoon. Walk into your kitchen and grab a spoon with a straight handle.

  1. Hold up your handle on the outer corner of your eye.
  2. Use the spoon’s edge as guidance. Make a line as long as you wish your wing to be.
  3. Use the rounded part of the spoon on your eyelid to make the top part of the wing. This will give you a curvy tip.
  4. Fill in the space.

5. Card

If you have a note card or business card just lying around, put them to use. This is a great way to ensure that post wings will look the same.

  1. Take your card and cut a line to match the size of your eyes.
  2. Cut out the wing you would desire.
  3. Use it as a stencil on both eyes.

You can also use the edge of your debit or credit card.
