How to Fight the Sunday Scaries

Sometimes waking up with the worst case of the Sunday scaries can be horrifying. On the other hand, you’ve probably just enjoyed the past 48 hours in a pure state of bliss. Once the clock hit 5:00 PM on Friday, you were ready to decompress from the week, chill out, and hang out with friends. Friday nights and Saturday days and nights are the best part of the weekend. You’re not even thinking about Monday or the week coming up ahead. You’re simply enjoying some quiet relaxing time or creating crazy fun memories with friends and bar hopping. Whatever you might do from Friday night to Sunday morning will be unique, no matter what. But it will lead you to feel this ultimate Sunday scaries when you wake up. I hate waking up with the Sunday scaries. So when I feel anxious and nervous about the week ahead, I try and do five things that will set me up for the week and help alleviate some of those Sunday scaries.

1. Sleep

Sleep is crucial to curing the Sunday scaries. Don’t bother setting the alarm on Saturday night for Sunday morning sleep in until your body wakes you up. You need to recharge from the previous week or what you did over the weekend. I would also recommend trying to get to bed early on Sunday. Sleep will help you feel super recharged going into the week. You’re going to be super happy that you allowed yourself time to sleep, whether that was sleeping in, going to bed early, or even both. Sleep impacts our moods and feelings; when we are better rested, we can conquer more. Sleep should be a priority if you try to avoid these Sunday scaries or cope with them.


2. Cook a yummy meal

Food could get me through anything. Making myself a good meal on Sunday always helps me cope with my Sunday scaries. Whether making myself a delicious breakfast, or a nutritious dinner, I find that this helps me cope with my Sunday scaries. I know I’m recharging and refueling my body after a long and demanding week. I’m also doing something productive and taking care of myself, so that’s a win. If you’re trying to deal with your Sunday scaries, I highly recommend cooking yourself a meal and sitting down and truly enjoying it. It’s nice to take an hour to do something nice for yourself and then reap the benefits!

3. Plan for the week

I know this is not as fun, but taking some time to plan for the week can help you with your Sunday scaries. Even if you plan for 15 minutes out of your Sunday, this will help and make you feel better. It will most likely help alleviate other anxious feelings about returning to work on Monday. I try to sit down at my calendar in the afternoon, look at the week ahead, and note any appointments I need to plan for and anything unusual in my schedule. Planning for the week helps me calm down a little bit, and it helps me get a better idea of what exactly I need to do that week. Planning could even be scheduling your workout times. If you like to go to a workout class, book all your classes in advance, put them in your calendar, and you’re going to feel better, and like you’re very productive. Maybe this looks like meal planning and grocery shopping. It’s totally up to you but planning for the week ahead always helps my Sunday scaries!


4. Relax

Don’t forget it is still the weekend, so spend some time relaxing! There’s no need to rush out of bed Sunday morning and feel like you need to do a million things. I think it’s best to be a little more productive during the early afternoon so that I can chill out after I eat dinner. Relaxing could be reading a book, watching my favorite TV show on my couch, or taking the time to take care of my skin before the week ahead. You won’t regret taking the time now to relax while you can, especially before a busy week. Sometimes I know some people feel guilty about taking some time to relax, but in my opinion, Sunday is the best day to do this because it will allow you to recharge those batteries so you can conquer the week ahead. It will also help you feel calmer and help you cope with some of those anxious, scary feelings that Sundays can bring us. Whatever enables you to relax, I recommend doing this Sunday lead afternoon when you’re going to bed. It will help you feel recovered and recharged heading into the week. Relaxing is going to help combat those Sunday scaries.

5. Grocery shop

I know this isn’t fun either, but grocery shopping can be super helpful to do on Sunday and help with those Sunday scaries. For me, it’s something that I can do. It’s pretty mindless. I come up with a few meals I know I want to make, get the ingredients for those, and other kitchen staples of mine. And I head out to the grocery store and get what I need for the week. Grocery shopping helps eliminate my Sunday scaries because it’s one less thing I have to do on Monday or any other day. I have fresh food and produce to make some good meals, and it’s an excellent way to feel productive without feeling like it’s impossible. I like to feel organized on Sundays, and grocery shopping allows me to feel as though I’m organizing and setting myself up for the week successfully; therefore, it helps alleviate some of the Sunday scaries I have.
