10 Free Things To Do In Boston

Ahhhhh, free stuff, the great equalizer among college students. What could be even better than free paraphernalia? Free sights and adventures! You are in Boston, one of the greatest cities (in the US), with history, architecture, and opportunities abound! So go through this list & search for free things to do in Boston! The best things in life are free!

1. Film Screenings

It’s not the Cannes Film Festival in Paris, but it comes a close second ;), if you have never been to a free film screening at AMC, or at Lowes Boston Common 19, you are missing out. I’ve seen The Danish Girl, Steve Jobs, & Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them all for the lovely price of FREE! Did I mention I paid nothing for these tickets? Did I also mention that I saw these films before they even came out in theatres?

2. Bodega

A sight for sore eyes, Bodega is the hippest place you whippersnappers could be at. Right on Clearwater St. It looks like a little grocery store on the outside but is really a shoe store. Just because you can’t afford those shoes, doesn’t mean you can’t bask in the amazement that is Bodega.

3. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Did you know that you get a free tickets to the MFA, if you are a student in Boston? What, Free tickets? Why, yes, free tickets, pay attention when I’m talking to you! On the real, you have access to a variety of museums for free as a Boston student: The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Institute of Contemporary Art, the Isabella Stewart Gardner & The Harvard Art Museums Museum, all have free admission for Boston students. The MFA also has an event called mfaNOW, which is basically a massive, overnight museum party.

4. The Lawn on D

A large space where community events happen regularly, The Lawn on D is a free space for all! Live music, games, events, and giant, light-up swings.

5. The Freedom Trail

Fancy yourself some American history? Walk the length of the Freedom Trail. It is a 2.5 mile trek to discover the 16 historic sites, and learn interesting facts about the American Revolution.

6. The Boston Public Library

Read, relax, & take in the splendid architecture of The BPL.

7. Newbury Street

Ahhh. The visual apex of capitalism. But you know what’s better than buying things you don’t need (Or things you do need but can’t afford, or things you want and don’t need but can’t afford)? Window shopping! Newbury Street is a lovely area, with interesting stores (like Newbury comics-for some FREE comic book reading), energetic people, and lovely architecture. Newbury Street is a lot of fun, and you don’t have to buy anything to enjoy it.

8. The Boston State House

For the politician in you, the Boston State House offers free admission and free tours.

9. Faneuil Hall Marketplace

If it’s not beginning to look a lot like Christmas, it definitely will when you mosey on over to Faneuil Hall to witness the magic that is Faneuil Hall, & the gargantuan, lit up, Christmas tree. There is also a series of outdoor performances that are free, from touring Broadway companies, to Local musicians.

10. Judson B. Coit Observatory

It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.-William Shakespeare. Of course Shakespeare would say that- he didn’t go to a university with a giant astronomical telescope. He’s a hater.

Visit the Coit Observatory on the BU Campus to witness some diamonds in the sky. There is even a clear sky chart so you can plan ahead!
