10 Free Things To Do Around Pittsburgh

College students are known for one thing- being BROKE! But don’t worry, because I am here to tell you about all the ways you can have a good time while on a super tight budget. Everything listed is a bunch of free things to do not only around campus but also the city of Pittsburgh! So check out these 10 free things to do around Pittsburgh, relax, grab some friends and procrastinate all your work for just a little bit longer!

1. Go for a walk

I know you’re probably thinking, “Kate, why go on a walk when I can watch Netflix and sleep?” Because it’s good for you!! Plus, I can assure you that you will see some super cute puppies along the way. (Disclaimer: ask the owner BEFORE you pet the dog)

2. Head over to Schenley Park

This is definitely something to do when the weather is warmer because it is kind of a long walk from campus. But, there are so many cool places to take pictures, trails to walk through and even an open field to play any sport you want! This is a great place to relax and just watch the world go by. Definitely a great free thing to do around Pittsburgh to add to your list!

3. Explore the Cathedral of Learning

My roommate and I actually did this (shoutout Cassandra <3) and it was a lot of fun. Take the elevator all the way up to the top floor and work your way down. Each floor is something different.

4. Tour the Nationality Rooms

This is sort of a spin-off from the previous activity, but this in itself is a time absorber. You can either do this on your own or with a tour, either choice is great. Basically, the first 3 floors of the Cathedral hold many many rooms based on a certain nationality. Definitely, a cool thing to check out.

5. Go to Shadyside

This is personally one of my favorite spots outside of campus. Just a 15-minute bus ride to a cute town with great window shopping opportunities!

6. Ride the Duquesne Incline

The great thing about this is that all you have to do is flash your Pitt I.D for a free trip to Mt. Washington! “Mt. Washington,” aka prime Instagram photos territory. Aren’t free things to do around Pittsburgh awesome?!

7. Visit the museums

Some of the best museums in Pittsburgh are free with your Pitt I.D!! Definitely a great thing to do on a rainy day.

8. Head over to Downtown

There are so so many places to explore in downtown. One of my favorites is the Point because of the beautiful views of the rivers and the skyline!

9. Nordy’s Place

Located in the basement of the Union, this is the best study break spot on campus. There are comfy chairs, pool tables, televisions, and sometimes there is even live music playing!

10. Watch a movie with your friends!!

I can assure you that you will survive if you don’t go to a party every weekend. Sometimes it’s actually a lot more fun to stay in, put on some comfy pajamas and just relax. So, make 100 bags of popcorn and break out the Disney movies!!!!

Whether you want to stay inside or admire the great outdoors, there are a ton of free things to do around Pittsburgh! Let us know if you have any to add in the comments below!
