Eye Lash Lift VS. Eye Lash Extensions: Pros And Cons Of Each

The big question right now is, should you get an eye lash lift or extension? There is a huge debate in the beauty world when it comes to these eye lash trends. Some love their lifts and others can’t go without their extensions. It’s an important decision to make, because “hello” these are your eyes! Make sure you look at the pros and cons of getting a lash lift or extension before you make a decision!

Eye Lash Lift:

An eye lash lift is one of the trending topics when it comes to eye lash care. Essentially, an eye lash lift is a perm for your natural lashes. When you go to the salon, the technician will have everything sterilized and ready to go. They’ll start by cleaning the area and applying a wax to hold lashes in place. Then they will comb the lashes, allowing them to become smooth and straight.

Next they will add the solution which is what keeps the lashes “lifted”. Once that is done, they will do the after care steps and you will be ready to go! Keep in mind that you can’t get your lashes wet for at least 24 hours (think Elle Wood’s hair care maintenance quote) unless you want to undo everything that the technician just did.

Pro: Curls And Tints

One of the major decisions between a lash lift or extension is how dramatic you want the lashes to be. With a lash lift, your natural lashes will be emphasized. So you’ll end up with longer and perfectly fanned out lashes. This is great for those of you with shorter or straight lashes! Plus while you are getting your lashes lifted, you can also get them tinted at the same time. A tint will make your lashes darker and more outstanding.

Pro: Makeup Routine Is Quicker

When you wake up in the morning, your lashes are ready for the day. Since they are lifted and curled, you will automatically look more refreshed (even if you’re running on a few hours of sleep). Now that you don’t have to worry about curling your lashes, you can fast forward to applying mascara for added color or volume.

Pro: Less Expensive

A huge difference between a lash lift or extension is the price. An eye lash lift cost on average about $75 to $100 per treatment depending on where you go! This is a huge savings when comparing it to eye lash extensions. Plus there is no routine care cost with lash lifts!

Pro: Long Lasting

Eye lash lifts are a semi-permanent solution for keeping your lashed lifted. They last on average six to eight weeks, or about the natural growth cycle of lashes. How long the perm last can also depend on your skin type. If you are prone to oily skin, it may cause your lashes to uncurl faster, as the oils will break down the keratin treatment on lashes.

Con: It Can Ruin Lashes If Not Done Properly

We can’t stress this one enough. Go to someone who is a TRAINED PROFESSIONAL to do your eye lash lift! It’s so important to go to someone who knows what they are doing. The technician uses a chemical solution in the lash lift process. You don’t want to trust that to just anyone who says they can do it. Your lashes take a least four weeks to grow out and that’s a long to time wait if something goes wrong.

Con: Longer Not Fuller

After an eye lash lift, your lashes will simply be lifted. Which is great it its own way. However, if you are looking for something with a little more oomph, this is not the way to go. You are using your natural lashes only, so you won’t get a more dramatic look.

Con: Some Irritation

With any procedure, there is a rick for irritation. Since this is a chemical solution, there is a chance of irritation if you have sensitive skin. There may also be some soreness to the eyelid afterward. They use wax to keep the lashes in place during the process. Think about wearing a tight ponytail all day; there’s some discomfort after a while. This should only last a few hours at most. Remember, if you have any questions, ask your technician.

Con: No Oil Based Products

If you wear waterproof mascara, then you are out of luck! With an eye lash lift, you can’t use any oil based products, including makeup removers. These products will strip the lashes, causing them to fall faster. So don’t watch any sad movies or jump into the pool!

Eye Lash Extensions:

Eye lash extensions are a great way to get fuller, thicker lashes that will last day after day. Just like hair extensions, lash extensions are added onto your individual natural lashes. When you go to the salon, the technician will start by cleaning and prepping the area. They will tape down your lower lashes to prevent them from getting stuck together!

Next they will start gluing on extension to the natural lashes. They will make sure they are evenly spaces throughout your lashes to prevent clumping. Once they are set and dried you will have fabulous looking lashes. Hint: make sure they are completely dried before opening your eyes!

Pro: Volume And Length

One of the biggest differences between a lash lift or extension, is the look of the lashes at the end. If you want va-va voom lashes, extensions are meant for you. Since an extension is applied to each natural lash, you come out with fuller, thicker and longer lashes.

Pro: Many Options

Lash extensions are customizable, so you can choose the look you want. You can choose from silk, mink or synthetic; keep in mind sensitive skin. You may also choose the desired length as well! You want to make sure the technician places an extension on each lash. This way as they start to come off, it won’t look as bare as quickly.

Pro: No Mascara Needed

When you have lash extensions, you’ll have lashes so fabulous they won’t even need mascara. You’ll find you can’t live without them. There are some precautions you’ll have to take (showering) to keep them on. Since you won’t have to curl your lashes or apply mascara, your makeup time should take significantly less time.

Con: More Expensive

You can’t have the good without the bad. When it comes to the cost of a lash lift or extension, there is quite the difference. The average price for lash extensions can range anywhere from $150-$200 for the first set. Plus there are fills and maintenance fees that cost so much per month as well.

Con: More Upkeep

Just like with many cosmetic add ons, there is some maintenance that comes with it. Your extensions will last about four to six weeks, before you need another set. Since the lashes are attached with glue, you have to be careful how you take care of them. That means do not rub your eyes or put your face directly under the shower spray. You may have to alter your makeup and beauty routines as well!

Con: Self Love Issues

One of the biggest issues with lash extensions, is that is can cause self love issues. If you get used to yourself looking a certain way, sometimes you can be dissatisfied when the look changes. This means that you can start to not love your natural looks (when the lash extensions come off). Remember, that beauty procedures can become addictive and you shouldn’t chance your health on something as silly as looks!
