I have struggled my whole life with embracing my curls. I have naturally thick hair filled with kinky curls and I made every effort possible to make sure that the rest of the world never saw it. I started getting relaxers when I was young because I was in love with long silky straight hair. Although it was amazing having straight hair, the relaxers left my hair broken and damaged. However, this did not mean that I stopped wanting straight hair, and so I would straighten my hair weekly. You guessed it, this was not so great for my hair either. It was not until I hit college and realized how much time I wasted straightening my hair that I decided to start embracing my natural crazy curly hair and move toward a devacut haircut. The start of this natural hair journey began with a trip to the Devachan Salon in Soho. There I met a curl specialist who cut my hair and got rid of the dead hair that remained from straightening my hair all those years.
Here’s the step by step process of that haircut. You never know, maybe some of you curly haired ladies out there will take trip there and start embracing your natural locks! So read on for everything you need to know about getting a Devacut haircut!
I had done extensive research on her before booking my appointment with her. I chose her specifically because I was sure that she would do an amazing job with my hair. I arrived at the salon with my hair freshly washed and no product at all in it. As you can see in the photo, my hair looked like a hot mess!
I came with photos of hairstyles that I wanted her to replicate. Although she informed me that we would not be able to replicate that exact look due to the texture and state of my hair (it was that bad), she would try her best to give my the look that I wanted. Lucky for me, she did!
We decided that she would cut off ALL my dead hair, even though it would be shorter than I was used to. I told you I am all about embracing this new healthy hair lifestyle and I prepared myself to take the plunge. The Devachan Salon specializes in a method that cuts curly hair dry and “curl-by-curl.” This helps to give the curl definition and to prevent unevenness in the hair which often happens when cutting curly hair wet.
…my hair had shape and I could instantly tell the difference. There is nothing more satisfying than watching someone chop off all those disgusting split ends!
It was hidden by nice silver drapes and the washing seats were cushioned reclining chairs. The lady washing my hair instructed me on the proper way to wash my hair and the right products to use for my specific hair type. She detangled and styled my hair while I was still in the washing station. After that I sat under the dryer to let my the product set in and have my curls dry.
…the finished product! I have never seen my hair this curly and I love it! All the split ends are gone and I am left with this cute short curly look that I could not be more happy with. The Devachan Salon is definitely where I will be going to cater to my curls and I will not be straying from Nevila who did such a wonderful job! All in all, I was very happy with my experience and would recommend it to anyone who wants to embrace their curly hair, or just needs a place to get their curly hair cut. It is so worth it!
