What They Don’t Tell You At JWU Orientation

JWU orientation can be an extremely exciting and informative experience that will prepare you for your upcoming year; however, they may not tell you everything you need to know about college. Here’s a few top secret tidbits of info. that will help you with your first year of college!

1. They don’t tell you how many group projects you’ll be participating in.

I’ll tell you since they won’t; be prepared for upwards of three group projects per trimester!

2. It can be challenging to make friends.

If only making friends in college was as easy as it was in kindergarten.

3. College can have an affect your mental health.

College can be an amazing experience, but it can take a toll on your mental health; if you ever feel that it’s too much, don’t hesitate to reach out to school counselors, friends, or even professors.

4. Textbooks are expensive.

I knew textbooks were going to be expensive, but YIKES! They definitely don’t tell you this.

5. Taking time for yourself is okay.

At orientation they tend to stress how important it is to socialize, join clubs, rush a sorority or fraternity, and just overall get involved in the college community; but I’ll tell you now, it is completely okay to take time to yourself as well.

6. Sleep schedules change.

Prior to my freshman year of college, I had no idea that I could go to sleep at 3 a.m. and wake up at 8 a.m. and still function like a normal human being; so don’t be surprised if the same happens to you!

7. You might go through a phase of homesickness.

At orientation you’ll learn all about your new found freedom, independence, and all the fun you’ll have, especially if you’re an out-of-state student; but they don’t really address homesickness that comes with this choice. If you find yourself wanting to leave school because you’re so homesick, understand this is a completely normal feeling that you will eventually push through, so don’t worry!

8. The year goes by QUICKLY.

Enjoy your first year, because you’ll be moving onto the second one in the blink of an eye!

10. You might consider changing your major.

As you take classes specified for your major, there’s a chance you may realize it’s not the major for you, and that’s totally fine! If you begin questioning your major, don’t delay; speak to a counselor or an advisor who can help you switch your major or place you in general classes that you may complete while you find the right path

11. On-campus events are actually fun.

Who would think school hosted events could be so much fun?!
