25 Cute Hair Highlights Ideas For All Hair Shades

My usual hairstyle is down with a little bit of a natural wave and sometimes it is so frustrating to me because I feel it has become too boring. I’ve never had hair highlights before, but I have been looking into it more recently because I think it would give me the newness I’ve been wanting with my hair.

If you are needing something new as well, hair highlights are so nice because they can be as subtle as you want and need or super crazy. I’ve found twenty-five hair highlights ideas that work for all hair shades and that are super cute!

1. Grey Highlights On Black Hair

The color grey does not mean old anymore. It is actually a super cute highlight color! With these hair highlights, your grey will be coming from the bottom and heading up your hair instead of the other way around. The black and grey work really well together and help each other both stand out in their own ways.

These highlights only go up a little over halfway which adds that contrast you need so you don’t have a full head of grey highlights. The grey becomes brighter towards the bottom, which of course, you can have adjusted to even brighter or dim down a bit.

2. Blonde Highlights On Brunette Hair

For brunette hair, these hair highlights are probably the most popular. Blonde on brown really works as the minimal blonde is just enough to brighten the brown up. Have the hairdresser start the highlights at the top of the head to give it a more natural look. As the blonde and brown begin to mix together more towards the bottom, your hair will start to look more caramel, which is a lovely color.

3. Brown Highlights On Dark Brunette Hair

Another classic brunette hair highlights are the light brown highlights on dark brown hair. If you are looking for a more natural highlight look, have the hairdresser take the highlights higher up on the head but underneath so that it blends in a little more.

The lighter brown highlights work really well with the darker hair. They are softer towards the top and become brighter as they go down the hair. It creates a nice contrast that isn’t super distracting and they definitely do not overwhelm the overall hairstyle.

4. Silver Highlights On Black Hair

These hair highlights are close to the grey highlights on black hair, however, these highlights are more silver than grey. The shine of these highlights is super bright and with certain lighting come off as kind of blue which is a beautiful contrast to the black hair. This would be another great look to have the silver pool at the bottom of the hair, however, having them up higher looks just as good.

5. Blonde Highlights On Blonde Hair

Having darker blonde hair means you can have lighter blonde highlights and it will actually work well. Like in the photo, the sunshiney blonde highlights bring out the darker blonde from underneath creating a beautiful mix of color. These hair highlights would be perfect for the summertime so that those blonde highlights look extra shimmery.

6. Light Brown Highlights On Brunette Hair

These hair highlights are similar to the previous brown highlights on dark brown hair, however, these hair highlights are pretty light almost to the point of being blonde, but not quite. With highlights, you can ask for really any shade you think will go best with your hair. Brunette highlights that are different shades than the actual brunette hair create a wonderful natural hairstyle that will make your darker hair pop.

7. Blonde Highlights On Platinum Blonde Hair

Blonde highlights on platinum blonde hair create a warm and cold look since the blonde highlights look kind of yellow and the platinum blonde gives off a blue tint. The blonde highlights are pretty subtle but they stick out just enough for that really pretty mixture of shades. You definitely do not want the blonde hair highlights to be much brighter otherwise they might overwhelm the hairstyle making it look kind of odd.

8. Blonde Highlights On Red Hair

Okay, kind of off-topic, I seriously love red hair. Not that I don’t like any other hair color because I find beauty in all of them, but I think the only reason Ariel is my favorite Disney princess. Okay, back to the hair highlights. This look is really amazing. The blonde is actually kind of subtle even though it is still pretty bright. The red outshines it a little and it also isn’t super heavy throughout the hair either.

These hair highlights start at the top of the head and go all of the way down creating a more natural look. Blonde highlights with red hair create a fiery look as that blonde looks pretty yellow next to the red. They mix really well together.

9. Fire Highlights On Red Hair

These hair highlights are actual fire. No, they just give off that look. This highlighted hairstyle features red, orange, and yellow colors that are added on the hair underneath the top layer so that they are not straight out for everyone to see. This is a very interesting technique and it is super great if you are looking for unique highlight colors, but need to have a professional look.

10. Orangey-purple Highlights On Red Hair

A color combination of hair highlights that I never really considered was an orangey-purple. These hair highlights are on red hair in this photo, but I think this combination would actually work on many other hair shades such as brunette.

The orange really stands out, but when you really look at the highlights, that purple stands out a bit too and it looks really cool. This would be a great style for Halloween time if you are a big fan of that holiday. Really show that spooky spirit.

11. Brown Highlights On Black Hair

I’ve always thought that the colors brown and black very rarely go well together, however, they work great together in these hair highlights. The brown is added halfway down and is very subtle but adds that extra color to make it pop. It looks like they are just on the surface of the hair in this photo, but I am sure it would look really good if it was added deeper into the hair as well.

12. Blonde Highlights On Dark Brunette Hair

Another blonde highlight on brunette hair. This time, it is a dark brunette hair with almost platinum blonde hair highlights. To draw more attention to the blonde highlights, they start halfway down the hair and brighten as they go. They are heavier at the tips of the hair and give the darker brunette hair color a bit of a shine.

13. Blonde and Brown Highlighted Tips

With these hair highlights, we do not see a full strip of highlights like the rest of the examples. These highlights are mainly at the tips of the hair. The lighter brown and blonde mix so well together on that darker brunette hair shade. They both compliment the base shade and create a lovely framing of the face.

14. Purple Highlights On Brunette Hair

We’ve seen a lot of purple with these hair highlights, so I might as well add another one. This is purple on brunette hair and it is so beautiful. The hairdresser made the purple pretty heavy in the hair, but I think it works. If you aren’t looking for so much purple, you can always ask to have it toned down a bit. Maybe have the purple come out underneath the hair so that it is a little more subtle.

15. Red and Purple Highlights On Brunette Hair

Very much like the orange and purple hair highlights, purple and red highlights go really well together and this photo shows you the hair highlights on brunette hair. This highlighted hairstyle does not reach all of the way to the top of the head but gradually starts to brighten as the colors move down the hair.

The red stands out most with the brunette, but that purple starts to really come out at the tips of the hair. Of course, you can ask the hairdresser to add more purple in, but it is the perfect subtle color to sneak into your highlighted hairstyle.

16. Red and Orange Highlights On Brunette Hair

Warm colors like red and orange work really well with brunette hair shades. That is why these hair highlights work so well. Not only are these colors highlights, but the hairdresser also put them in as ombre highlights going from red to orange.

If you are going for a more colorful look but need some colors to go well with your brunette hair shade, these hair highlights are definitely ones to consider!

17. Blonde and Brown Highlights On Brunette Hair

With darker brunette hair, you have the chance to create a natural highlighted look with blonde and brown hair highlights. People with natural highlights most likely have these two colors already. You can decide on how dark or light the shades are to either make them pop, or make them look more subtle.

18. Blonde and Purple Highlights On Brunette Hair

If you are looking for something truly unique for hair highlights, check out these blonde and purple highlights on brunette hair. With highlighted hairstyles, you don’t have to choose just one color. These blonde hair highlights go with that popular blonde highlighted hairstyle, but that purple brings in the wow factor and combines nicely with the blonde and brunette, since a pretty versatile color and can go with a lot.

19. Purple Highlights On Platinum Blonde Hair

More purple hair highlights! Having a platinum blonde base for a hair color gives you so many options for highlights such as this highlighted hairstyle. The purple is heavy near the scalp and top part of the head and lightens up as it goes down. These highlights mixed with the platinum, blonde creates a wonderful look that will shimmer in the sun for sure!

20. Purple Highlights On Black Hair

These hair highlights are super cool because the purple highlights that are put in mixed with the black hair make the highlights come out more maroon than purple. The maroon blends in so nicely that you don’t really see the highlights unless you are under certain light. So, if you are looking for a subtle look, this would be a great one to try out!

21. Colorful Highlights

These colorful highlights are seriously so awesome looking! I would love to try them out sometime, but I just don’t think I could pull it off. The hairdresser did an amazing job creating an ombre look between all three colors.

Having a platinum blonde base works great for highlights like these so that the colors pop so much more. What a perfect combination for springtimes6.!

22. Platinum Blonde Highlights On Black Hair

Here are more light hair highlights on black hair. The first couple was grey on black and silver on black, but this one comes out as more of a platinum blonde highlights on black hair. Like the silver highlights, this platinum blonde is so shiny and bright that with a certain light, it gives off a blue tint which is something to consider when you decide on what kind of highlights you are wanting.

23. Pink Highlights On Blonde Hair

This highlight work is actually pretty cool because the way the hairdresser did this, it looks like the pink is the actual hair color and the blonde is the highlights. With this kind of look, have the hairdresser put in the hair highlights underneath your hair giving it this kind of look.

The pink will pop out at the top, but when you are walking around, or the way you do your hair, that pink will pop out from underneath and it will be such a wow factor. Everyone will love it and ask you what the process was for it.

24. Pink Highlights On Platinum Blonde Hair

Platinum blonde is such a pretty color and this shade of hot pink mixes so well with it! These hair highlights are heavier in the middle of the hair and pool at the bottom. This look can be done with any color highlight, though, that combines well with platinum blonde.

This is the hairstyle that is “business in the front, party in the back” as most of the highlight is in the back of the hair leaving a minimal amount of pink in the front. If you need to have a more professional look, you can definitely still pull this look off, and then put your hair up to cover up that pink for certain occasions.

25. Red Highlights On Blonde Hair

These hair highlights are very subtle in the picture, but the great thing about hair is you can always choose to go as light or as dark as you want! I have blonde hair but it has a red tint in the summer which I love, so I would definitely get these hair highlights so I can have that red tint all year long!

This look would be enhanced even more with a medium copper red and some lighter blonde shades within already blonde hair. Like the picture, the lighter blonde is heavier towards the face to make a nice frame.

I would love to be able to pull off the colorful hair highlights! What hair highlights draw your attention most? Let us know in the comments below.
