7 Caribbean Dishes You Need To Try ASAP

If you are a food fan you are always on the lookout for new types of cuisine to try! Caribbean dishes have that particular savory flavors, textures and mouth-watering smells that remind us of a sunny sea at a paradisiac beach. If you haven’t tried this type of food yet, we can only advice you to do so ASAP because it’s going to become one of your favorites ever!

1. Rice And Beans

Seasoned with garlic, onions and creole spice rice and beans is a traditional must when we talk about Caribbean dishes! While it might sound like a simple recipe because their main ingredients are rice and red kidney beans, its flavor is not simple at all. The secret of this dish is the use of coconut milk to cook the rice instead of regular water. Also, it is made with hot pepper which gives this Caribbean dish a unique flavoring!

2. Patties

Another one the traditional Caribbean dishes that can be served as a breakfast, lunch or for tea time! Patties are a usually round shortcrust pastry filled up with beef, saltfish or chicken minced with turmeric, thyme, and hot pepper sauce. You can also find vegetarian patties or other ones with pork fillings. Be sure to try a traditional homemade patty to get the real experience!

Known for being Jamaica’s traditional dish and therefore a basic food to try when it comes to Caribbean dishes, ackee and saltfish are usually eaten with rice and beans or white rice as a dinner or breakfast. To prepare this Caribbean dish you will need salt cod sautéed with boiled ackee, onions, bonnet peppers, tomatoes and spices like pimiento and black peppers. Some people like to garnish this dish with bacon or tomato. Definitely, a savory one you should try!

4. Coconut Drops

If raindrops at the beach had a taste, they will definitely taste like coconut drops! You can find this traditional Caribbean dish at any party as a sweet to share with people. Made of. Combination of coconut, brown sugar, powder ginger for spiciness and vanilla, coconut drops are a deliciously sweet dish you are going to be craving every day!

A green vegetable wholesome Caribbean dish, callaloo’s main ingredient is an indigenous leaf vegetable traditionally amaranth, taro or coco & tannia, which locals usually call callaloo, giving the name to this dish. Callaloo can resemble spinach but they are not to be confused with! Tomatoes, coconut milk, bell peppers, onions, crabs or pigtails are additional ingredients you can find on this dish which varies from one Caribbean region to another. This Caribbean dish can also be used in soups or as a patty filling.

6. Breadfruit

This fruit is eaten all across the Caribbean region. It’s a green-skinned fruit that weighs around 2 to 6 pounds and can be harvest according to its final purpose. Breadfruit is high in protein, filling and energizing.

It is also a fruit that is traditionally made boiled, roasted or fried to make chips, breadfruit is used to do as much as you would do with plantains. This fruit can be included in soups or part of spicy curry, basically, breadfruits are a traditional Caribbean delicacy used to as a companion of various dishes!

7. Flying Fish

Don’t be alarmed by the name nothing is flying away but your taste buds! Flying fish is a traditional Caribbean dish made with a native fish of the island of Barbados called flying fish. Flying fish is served as fillets seasoned with lime juice, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper and usually served with a tomato and curry sauce to make this Caribbean dish a true delicacy.
