5 Reasons I’m Excited To Start At Wilfrid Laurier University

Starting somewhere new can be a nerve racking experience: new people, new environment, and new situations. This all can be rather daunting at first. But, also a nervous sort of exciting which I can’t wait for. As I prepare to start at Wilfrid Laurier University this fall. These are some of the reasons why:

1. A Small Campus

To be honest, I’m not someone who enjoys big crowds. I honestly find it a bit overwhelming. That’s why the size of Laurier’s Waterloo Campus is perfect for me. It’s small size not only allows you to get to your classes without having to sprint like your an olympic runner, but also allows for more intimate learning experiences. The small classrooms allow a far more one on one experience with the professors and other students. This enabling you to have more room for asking questions and understanding the topics at hand more thoroughly. Therefore, making a far more close knit school experience which for someone who is a rather anxious and shy individual, is a perfect fit.

2. L.O.C.U.S.

As someone who will be living off-campus for their first year of University. I was rather worried about not being able to be involved in the on campus events that people in residence get to experience. Until, I learned about the L.O.C.U.S. program that Laurier runs. L.O.C.U.S. stands for Laurier Off- Campus University Students and basically functions just like a residence building. You get a don once you join and register and they are there for you if you need academic help, personal help or anything in between. Therefore, including you in on-campus life and events. It’s also a great way to meet new people who are also part of your don group. Gaining new friendships as well as being part of your school in a very active way.

3. Wilf’s

I couldn’t talk about why I’m excited about going to Laurier without mentioning Wilf’s Restaurant and Bar. This place has an iconic reputation and is the center for many students nights out. From it’s delicious food with dishes such as The Hawker and The Seagram it doesn’t disappoint. But food isn’t the only reason that Wilf’s is so well loved. They also have game nights where you can win prizes for answering trivia questions right. This place is an integral part of Laurier and I’m so excited for the memories I’ll make there.

4. Laurier Musical Theatre

To say that I like musicals would be a massive understatement. i have been in love with musicals ever since I was a little girl watching Rent for the first time. Yes, I was most likely too young to really understand this musical at the time but it sparked the musical loving nerd in me to come alive. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. So, that’s why I can’t wait to join Laurier’s Musical Theatre group this coming school year. I’ve always found it tough to present in front of others but I believe this will be a great challenge for me! Laurier’s Theatre group did an excellent production of Footloose this past year and can’t wait to see what’s next in store. As someone who can keep a tune and has been obsessed with everything musical from a young age this club is one I’m very excited to join!

5. The Harry Potter Alliance

Harry Potter Alliance….need I say more. It’s like Dumbledore’s Army has finally arisen in reality but instead of fighting they fangirl. This club is about students who are passionate about the world of Harry Potter. They discuss the books, movies and any other adaptations. Questioning whether Draco Malfoy was just misunderstood and whether Snape is a good or bad guy. But, this isn’t all they do. Though fangirling is an important part of this Alliance they also give back. Raising money and awareness about causes that matter to them. Including lumos week which is held on mental health week discussing and raising funds for a cause that really matters. All in all, I can’t wait to join a club that nerds out and helps out.

Overall, Laurier seems like a home away from home to me ( I know corny but truthful) especially with all the changes fast approaching me in my life. I’m excited to start at a school which will have such a strong and supportive community for me to fall back on. I can’t wait for this school year to begin.
