Beauty From Home: Skin Care Tips Using Household Items

How often are the skin care tips you’re given either completely ludicrous (i.e. find some garden snails and rub them all over your face), or extremely over budget (I mean, all the celebs swear by the 24-karat vampire steamed facial, so it must work, right)? Who made the rule that to get good skin, you need to leave the house first? Instead, use what’s in your kitchen right now to get your skin looking great with minimal effort and expenditure.

Dryness & Cold-Pressed Avocado Oil

If you suffer from dry patches, this hack is going to change your life. You could choose to buy avocado oil, or make it at home by using the pureed avo you were going to spread on toast. Instead, heat it up and then strain through a cloth. Collect the oil, and apply to areas of skin that need smoothing or moisturizing. Avocado oil can increase collagen production in the skin.

Inflammation & Teabags

Place cooled teabags on areas of your body that have become irritated, such as razor burn on your legs. Tannic acid is excreted by the teabags, which will soothe the burning sensation and reduce inflammation.

Acne, Milk & Honey

Create a gentle and natural cleanser by mixing a few drops of honey with some milk and applying to your face. Honey is a great antioxidant, which repairs the skin. The lactic acid in the milk will help exfoliate your skin.

Face Scrubs & Yoghurt

Some face scrubs contain microbeads made from plastic that harm the environment. Instead, choose natural skin care tips and make a mask of equal parts plain yoghurt and cornmeal, with a half part grapefruit juice. Refrigerate before use to ensure that it sets.

Sunburn & Oatmeal

If you’re suffering from a painful sunburn, take care of it with these skin care tips. Soak oatmeal with icy-cold milk and make a compress, then place it on your burn. This will help soothe your skin.

Dry Hands & Milk

Dermatitis in your hands can be treated with warm milk. Heat some full-fat milk to re-invigorate your skin. Submerge your hands in the liquid for up to ten minutes.

Flaky Lips & Brown Sugar

Alexa Chung swears by these skin care tips. Forget store-bought lip scrubs; all you need to do is mix brown-sugar with Vaseline, and your lips will be luscious once more.

Hyperpigmentation & Lemons

If your skin starts to dullen or darken in certain areas, try applying fresh lemon slices to the spots. Once done regularly, the dark spots begin to fade. The citric acid promotes cell-turnover.

Collagen & Soy Milk

Collagen boosting skin care tips are always useful. Just use soy milk as you would a toner, and let it soak into your face.

Pimples & Cinnamon

This spice has antioxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties! That’s pretty sweet. Mix it with honey, and use as a spot treatment.

Clarifying Masks & Honey

Create a mask of raw honey to hydrate and clean your skin. Household skin care tips often use honey because it has so many uses! This mask will draw out all the nasties in your pores with its antibacterial abilities.

Puffy Eyes & Metal Spoons

Finally, some non-food skin care tips, for all those who are getting hungry from this list. Just pop some spoons into the fridge, and when your suffering from dark circles, place the spoons over them to reduce inflammation.

Pore Shrinking & Tomatoes

Dilute tomato juice in water, and apply like a toner to your skin for a quarter of an hour. Your pores will be itty-bitty in no time.

Scarring & Egg Yolk

Applying whisked egg yolk to zits will reduce the potential for long-term scarring. Don’t be afraid to get egg on your face.

Dark Circles & Black Tea

Many skin care tips aimed at correcting dark under-eyes, and teabags are one of the more effective kinds. Place cooled tea-bags on your closed eyes to reverse the effects of sleep deprivation.
