5 Reasons Why I Chose To Go To University of Technology Sydney

Currently, I’m in my second year studying Communications. At the beginning of last year, I was tentative and nervous about my chosen course and second-guessing my choice of university. However, I think now I’m at a place where I am 100% sure that I’m where I’m supposed to be and happy with my education/career path. Read on to find out why I chose University of Technology Sydney.

1. City Location

While I despise waking up early in the morning to get to class on time, I have to admit that it’s worth it. UTS is located in the city so I’m close to all my friends that go to UTS, UNSW, USYD etc. Train rides in the morning and afternoon are always incredibly relaxing and calm (provided you find a spare seat on the train). Unlike other city unis, our closest train station is only a short walk away–no need to wait for shuttle buses to drop you off! Not to mention, there are so many cool restaurants and food places in the city–especially for gelato and Korean Barbeque–to go before and after classes. Also, whenever there are events happening in the city, like Vivid for example, you can easily go there to hang out with your friends and have great experiences together!

2. Practical, industry-relevant Assessments

As a Communications student, a majority of our coursework involves academic debates and discussions of real world issues relating to economics, politics, social issues etc. as well as practical work to produce digital content (e.g. documentaries, scripts, short films etc.). All of the content learned within our short semesters is incredibly relevant to our respective majors and careers paths and prepares us for real world situations.

3. Events, Networking and Work Experience

UTS has so many fantastic societies, work opportunities, volunteering events and networking sessions available to everyone on campus to go to. For example, our uni publication Vertigo allows anyone with talent to contribute to their magazine, allowing people to develop their portfolio. There are also opportunities to be an exchange student for a semester (one of my friends is travelling to Sweden during the Spring session–how great is that?!).

4. Lecturers, Tutors and Classmates

I never feel like I’m in high school when I’m in my lectures or tutorials because these guys always make sure to treat everyone as their peers and academic equals when possible. Also, everyone talks in class and always has an opinion to contribute to the class, making every tutorial interesting. It’s definitely not like in high school where the majority of the class would be silent and I’m definitely never bored in tutes.

5. The Atmosphere and Space

Despite the fact that I’m not an IT student, I spend a good chunk of my time in the IT building at UTS. It’s calm, quiet and easy to study in without distractions. The atmosphere is relaxing, almost feels like home. The lawn outside the main building is also a great hang out spot, whether it’s by yourself bathing in the sunlight or with your friends lounging on the grass during breaks. Another benefit is that there are elevators in most of the buildings across campus and not that many stairs. Not only is the atmosphere relaxing and calm, it’s also not exhausting to get everywhere (unless you have classes all across campus in which case you will be tired no matter what).

Depending on what course you’re studying, what job you want to have in the future as well as where you live, the uni that is the best one for you to go to is ultimately going to be different from me and everyone else. The most important thing is that you’re happy!
