10 Empowering Songs By Indie Female Artists You Need On Your Playlist

I love listening to indie songs, and I realised most of my playlists are comprised of indie female artists. I think indie female artists are underrated. So here are 10 empowering songs by indie female artists you need on your playlist. These songs showcase powerful empowering lyrics showing that these female artists are here to stay and take over the world.

1. I Said Hi – Amy Shark

Amy Shark is a well-known indie artist, and this song was an anthem for me last year when I was working on my novel. It acknowledges working on your dream reads sacrificing some things. It’s okay to skip a social event to work on making your dream come true. Dreams require hard work.

2. Shine – ASTA

This song has become my anthem for this year. When you fall, get back up. And if you fall again, get back up again. If you want something, go after it. You may face numerous obstacles, but if you really want something and don’t give up, then you’ll get it. It’s positive and upbeat and is as much about the celebration of hard work as it is about working hard.

3. Kings & Queens – Brooke Fraser

I love how this song acknowledges there’s a long way to go but it also makes you look back and realise how far you’ve come and you should be proud of your achievements. It’s as much about celebrating the present as it is about celebrating the past and future. It’s full of energy and passion which will push you into continuing working towards your dream and will make you celebrate living in the present at the same time.

4. White Flag – Bishop Briggs

Bishop Briggs has such powerful vocals which demand your attention. Waving a white flag means giving up, but Bishop Briggs is demanding your attention and making you believe she’s not one to be messed with. Any time you feel like giving up, just listen to this song to get a powerful boost to keep going forward.

5. My Own Way – Kita Alexander

This song isn’t as upbeat as the others, but it’s still just as empowering. It’s got mellow summery vibes and passionate lyrics. It’s all about being strong enough to go off on your own and explore different paths; exploring things you want and not what everyone else tells you too.

6. Don’t Kill My Vibe – Sigrid

I love Sigrid, and she shouldn’t be such an understated artist. Mellow beats matched with empowering lyrics create a strong piece. It’s about being belittled as a young female artist breaking into the music industry. It’s about embracing your uniqueness and ignoring the people who try to tear you down for being different.

7. NoLo – Grace Mitchell

Full of sass and soulful voice, Grace Mitchell delivers a song about recovering from heartbreak. By realising what sadness feels like, she’s now able to see what happiness looks like. The experience made her stronger and work on her self-recovery. You have to know what low points in your life feel like so you know what the high points feel like and you can appreciate and enjoy them.

8. Regular Touch – Vera Blue

This song is the indie Single Ladies anthem and makes you want to dance. You don’t need society to pressure you to be in a relationship; you’re perfectly adequate on your own. It’s about being happy in your own skin and loving yourself just the way you are.

9. Warrior – AURORA

AURORA’s soaring voice and magical instrumentals create something other-worldly. It’s about pushing through the dark times to find the light. It’s all about keeping on fighting when we feel like we want to surrender.

10. Green Light – Lorde

I love Lorde. This is a powerful dance anthem that saw the beginning of a new Lorde era. With deep lyrics and an upbeat beat, it just makes you want to dance. It’s about finding the signs to leave a relationship and being a little scared to leave something familiar but eventually realising it’s not right. And being enticed by the freedom and adrenaline rush of being single again, of moving into a bigger and brighter future.

Do you know or love any of the songs I’ve included? What are some of your favourite empowering songs by indie female artists that aren’t on my lists?
