Are These Makeup Trends Worth The Hype?

With each passing year comes new, different and exciting makeup trends. Although not every new trend is worth their weight. If you find yourself wondering if these makeup trends are worth the hype this list is for you. Of course it all boils down to what you want out of your makeup and what you’re willing to do to get the desired effects. Some trends can be wiped off with a makeup towel, others are a little more invasive.

Microblading Eyebrows

This is arguably one of the most controversial makeup trends currently out there. Microblading is putting semi-permanent ink on your face, so borderline tattooing your eyebrows on. In recent years women are presented with perfectly sculpted brows by influencers and a wide array or products promising the fullest brows. While microblading sounds less invasive than saying tattoo it is still a procedure that can have bad results if done poorly. The verdict? Skip this makeup trend. For one thing it’s very, very expensive. It can actually cost more than lip fillers, another trend on this list. Another problem is that it doesn’t always work as well as you’d like it to. Your face isn’t actually symmetrical and it can look really strange if your brows are. Or if they do manage to follow the natural shape of your brows thicker, fuller brows can make it more abundantly clear they aren’t even. People with oily skin don’t react well to this procedure as well as many other skin types that will reject the ink. There’s also a healing time afterwards and if done wrong it can lead to disastrous results. This is one trend that should be just that, a trend that needs to end.

Eyelash Extensions

Thick, long, black lashes have always been in style. It’s commonplace for many women to wear false eyelashes on the regular. If you’re someone who struggles with placing them on your eyes or are tired of shelling out money for new pairs you may have considered this makeup trend. The verdict? They can be really nice, but kind of pricey. Typically eyelash extensions last as long as one lash cycle, which is six to eight weeks. If you’re someone who just wants get up and go without makeup, this is what you’d want. There are definitely horror stories of allergic reactions, bad glue or losing all lashes but as long as you go to a licensed esthetician you will be fine.

Overlining Lips

This is a makeup trend that kind of, sort of, caught on thanks to a certain beauty billionaire with famously large lips. While this celebrity eventually admitted they did actually get their pillow lips from a syringe many people are still debating if this makeup trend actually works. The verdict? Not really. To a degree, you can give your lips the slight appearance of looking larger by overlining but too much will have you looking like Miranda Sings. Instead of making your mouth look like you ate your lipstick, consider contouring your mouth. While this will never give you the look of having actual lip injections it will help trick the eye into thinking your mouth is slightly more pouty than before. Sadly if you’re looking to achieve jaw-dropping results you’re going to need to invest in some fillers.

Lip Injections

That being said if you still perfectly plumped lips you might be considering lip injections. The verdict on this cosmetic procedure? Go ahead, if you know what you’re getting yourself into. Lip injections will cost a pretty penny, and if they don’t run for the hills because cheap fillers can put you in the hospital or worse. They run anywhere from $500 to $2000 depending on how much you’re planning on using and can last 6 to 12 months. Also as tempting as it may be to consider getting permanent fillers that’s a big no no, the risks weigh out the benefits with that. Make sure you delete the celebrity photos from your phone. Most doctors won’t put someone else’s lips on you because everyone’s face is different. You might think you want Insta-inspired lips but your surgeon probably knows better. While this is also viewed as a less invasive procedure it definitely comes with risks. All of this and more is important to consider before making this decision.

Shaving Your Face

There’s an opinion out there that women shouldn’t have body hair, especially on their face. Which couldn’t be further from the truth. All women have some form of hair on their face, whether that’s just peach fuzz or more prominent pieces of hair. Now more and more women are coming forward admitting they do in fact shave their face. If you’re on the fence about this makeup trend you’re not the only one. The myth is shaving will cause thicker and more hair, shaving won’t do that. What shaving can do is lead to irritation of the skin, possible ingrown hairs and because you’re just cutting the hair not actually getting rid of it you may feel forced to shave on the regular. The verdict? Go ahead. It can be a mild way to exfoliate your face and it does in fact take away unwanted hair. Although if you’re looking for a more permanent solution consider laser hair removal.

Serums

Within the last few years, the beauty world has been pushing serums and taking care of your skin with elaborate routines. While it is very important to take care of your skin at any age all of this raises the question of whether or not this makeup trend works. Serums are designed to go deeper into your skin than typical moisturizers. Which can be good and bad. The key with these skincare products are to realize less is more and they’re an add on, not the whole routine. If you’re someone suffering from a severe skin condition these could potentially make them worse. One of the most popular types of serums are ones with Retinol, that can leave the skin dry, irritated and vulnerable to the sun. The verdict? Talk to your dermatologist. While everything else on this list is more or less personal preference this is something that could work out well or not at all. It’s important to remember you need a routine that fits your skin and not one an Instagram influencer is trying to sell you.
