An Open Letter To My Best Friend Who I Haven’t Seen In Awhile

We all have that one childhood friend who even though we haven’t seen them in years, we know that we still have each other. They were with you through your worst, awkward phases of braces, disproportionate limbs and your high pitched squeaky voice, and once you have someone love you through that, you know they’re in it for the long run. The following letter is for anyone who hasn’t seen one of their best friends in a long time, but more importantly to one of my best friends that I’ve had since elementary school. This is my letter to my best friend.

First off, I’d like to say I’m sorry.

I’m sorry that we never hang out anymore. Location was probably the hardest part of our friendship. Unlike most kids, I went to school in a different city, so I never had the chance to live close to my friends. I always lived out of the way so you couldn’t always come over and I usually didn’t have a ride to your house. Sadly, as we got older and started going to different high schools, I only occasionally saw you when you visited my school and the few conversations we had were through comments on each other’s Instagram posts or responses to Snapchat stories.

When we got our licenses, we thought that we could now drive to each other, but the one thing holding us back is that we both didn’t have cars (the struggle was and still is real). I’m sorry that we go through the same conversation every year, saying that we will “totally” hang out during the summer, but we never do. The timing is just never right, but hey, this is all temporary, we still have the rest of our lives to get it together. Don’t lose hope in me, it’s going to work out.

We need to take a walk down memory lane.

As I am writing this, I am remembering all of our fun and crazy adventures and all the laughs we shared. From early mornings at school when nobody was there to sleeping over at your townhouse and running around the shopping mall, I miss the simplicity of being young and carefree and being able to do the most random of things and still have a blast. With memory, some things start to fade, sometimes we add or miss details and I’d like to see what you remember, but no pressure. Let’s simply reminisce about the good old days.

I miss hanging out with your family.

Your family is so nice and welcoming, and I am so sad that I haven’t seen them in forever. Please please please tell everyone I say, “Hi” and that I hope they are doing well. Also, I know this is a letter to my best friend, but Imiss your mom’s cooking, I remember it being so delicious.

Every time we see each other, it’s like nothing has changed.

There’s something about childhood friendships that are so easy, especially when it comes to someone you haven’t seen in a while. I want to say in this letter to my best friend that I love that when we see each other or catch up, nothing is awkward or uncomfortable, we simply fall back into our same rhythm. The conversations are endless because we have so much to catch up on.

I mean we don’t have to tell each other our whole life story (not unless you want it), but we simply just talking about what’s been going on  and other big stuff that really impacted us through the years we weren’t together. What’s interesting about childhood friendships is that they know a whole different side of you and through the years of growing up, we both have probably changed and went through different experiences, but at the core of our entire beings we are still the same lanky awkward children we grew up as.

You are my favorite person to run into, and what I mean by this is that we almost attack each other in excitement.

Hawai‘i is a small island, everybody knows everyone or at least has mutual friends. When you go to an event, you are bound to run into someone you know, and I am always so happy when I run into you. Whenever we see each other, we literally run into each other’s arms and give the tightest of hugs as if we need to reassure ourselves that you are real and are standing in front us.

Even though all we get to do is say “Hi” and catch up for a few minutes, this small moment means the world. I wish I could explain how happy I am when I see you but it would probably just be a bunch of clichés. I think what makes me so happy is that it is just so surprising that I would run into you. Who would’ve thought that out of all the people in the world I could run into at this event, I’d see you. I guess it just goes to show that great minds think alike.

I will always be there for you.

I feel like I always say this to my friends, but I really mean it, especially in this letter to my best friend. Call me, text me, Facetime, Skype, write me a letter, I don’t really care about the mode of communication, just reach out if you need to or if you just want to talk, you know how to get to me. I will always support you and be there to cheer you on no matter what.

Finally, Thank You!

I just wanted to thank you for putting up with me and being my friend. I seriously don’t know where I’d be without you. I’m sorry that I’m flaky but I hope you know that I care a lot about you. You taught me how to let loose and not worry about the small stuff, to be chill and to roll with the punches, and to be adventurous and to take a leap of faith. But besides all of this and much more, most importantly you taught me how to be myself, and for that I am eternally grateful. I love you so much, and I’ll see you next summer or whenever I run into you.

On a side note, I one hundred percent expect a invitation to your wedding or any life milestones.
