Things You’ll Only Understand If You Went To School In The UK

School in the UK is a unique experience, I think I speak for everyone when I say that. I mean, at the time we were waiting for it to come to an end but now, we would probably give anything to relive those moments. Here are 10 things you’ll only understand if you went to school in the UK, be prepared to reminisce.

CGP Revision guides.

Are you really going to sit here and tell me you went to school in the UK and did not heavily depend on CGP books to get you through your GCSE’S? These revision guides were iconic for every last-minute student.

Packed Buses

Afterschool was probably the best part of the day and also the worst part. If you went to school in the UK, you remember the crowded hectic buses as students squeezed into the bus to get home. Some schools even had a member of staff monitoring students at the bus stop.

Afterschool Chicken Shop.

This one may not apply to everyone, but I know it applies to a damn lot of us. Every school had a local chicken shop near it that students would flock to afterschool. I mean who could say no to cheap chicken wings?

Random Assemblies.

Being called in for an assembly because someone turned on the fire alarm to get out of lessons was most likely the most entertaining part of high school. Have students been selling snacks at school? Assembly. Are wet tissues being thrown onto the ceiling? You guessed it, assembly.

Breaking the uniform rules.

Wearing uniform doesn’t really seem like the worst of rules in hindsight, but back in school we all felt compelled to rebel against the system. Everyone who has gone to school in the UK has broken the dress code for one reason or another.

Not bringing your PE kit to school

In the UK, P.E is one of those subjects that didn’t sit well with those of us who hated exercise. I’m pretty sure everyone has “forgotten” their P.E at one point and had to sit out of the lesson.

Non-uniform day

Since we all had a dress code at school, non-uniform day was the time to show everyone how we usually dressed and to finally stunt on people. Come on, who didn’t look forward to the one day we could abandon the dull dress code we were forced to follow?

Bunsen Burner Ban.

This one applies more to those of us who went to a bad secondary school, there was always that one student who used the Bunsen burner inappropriately resulting in the banning of it.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

This book will always be a classic reminder of English class and is the only book that students actually really enjoyed at school. Are we really going to sit here and pretend that you didn’t cry when Lennie died?

Chewing gum under the tables.

I will always apologise to those of us who went to school that had year old tables with dry chewing under the table. This was one of those traumatic memories you tried to forget.
