Having a moving checklist is important. Figuring out what to pack when you first move to university can be a seriously daunting task. Suddenly you’re faced with the fact that you’re moving out of your childhood bedroom for the first time, and everything you own now seems essential to pack. Sure you haven’t read those books on your shelf in two years, but obviously you’ll need them in your new flat, right? Wrong. The worst thing to do when you’re moving to uni is to overpack, because when you’re all moved in you’ll find yourself with a lot of excess junk and nowhere to store it. Here’s our essential moving checklist for every new first year student!
You only need a maximum of 2 plates and 2 bowls, trust me. There’s limited cupboard space in University flat kitchen, you don’t want that being taken up by a full 16 piece set. You can find gorgeous individual pieces being sold in most supermarkets.
I know those tiny one egg pans are adorable, but don’t be drawn in thinking you’ll only need a small one, more often than not they just end up being too small for anything.
Most places have an external laundry block, meaning you’ll have to carry your washing across the courtyard/outdoor area, and you do not want your first introduction with your neighbours to be because you dropped a pair of panties on your way back!
Most places either provide you with one bathroom bin, or just nothing at all. It’s seriously frustrating to move in and realise there’s no bin when you need it, so make sure to get it before you move.
This might seem obvious, but when it’s absolutely freezing in winter you’ll be grateful for the extra layer!
Bring like a lunch box and 2 or 3 boxes for storing leftovers. the easiest way to save money in university is to bring your own food, so leftovers will soon become your new best friend.
We’re talking hanging shoe storage, drawer dividers, multi level hangers, the lot. Space Extra space in university is like gold dust, so you really need to maximise the potential of your storage space.
8. Slipper or flip flops
Believe me when I say those floors will never be clean no matter how much you mop. To save ruining all your socks within the first month, buy a cheap pair of slippers or flip flops to wear about the house.
If you don’t have access to a tumble dryer, you really need to get one of these. There’s definitely not enough space on your singular radiator for a full load of washing.
Seriously, everyone seems to forget that cheese graters are a thing when they move to university. In my first year house there were 10 people, like 25 pans and not one cheese grater!
After all this just remember, if you end up overpack don’t stress because pretty much everyone else will have overpacked too! Also, you’re guaranteed to forget at least 1 thing so plan a shopping trip a day or two after you move in, its a great way to get what you need and bond with your flatmates if you bring them along!
