15 Of The Best Places To Eat In Newcastle For Dessert

My philosophy in life is to always leave room for dessert. Yes, I may be about to burst at the seams, but I’m not leaving my cheesecake behind. After three years living in the toon, I’ve tried and tested all the best desserts Newcastle has to offer. Chocolate lovers, ice cream fans and cake addicts can rejoice; you’ll never be without your favourite sugary meals again.

1. Freakshake at the Great British Cupcakery

Yes, I know they’re a cupcakery, but their freakshakes are what dreams are made of. Pint-sized and decked with home-made sauce, cream and baked goods, prepare to be full for a week (or three).

2. Hanging marshmallow kebab at The Botanist

Thought kebabs were just for 3am munchies and a tummy filled with regret? Think again! These  strawberry and toasted marshmallow hanging kebabs will take you right back to those childhood evenings around the campfire. Except without the bugs… and the dirt… and the rain.

3. Salted caramel brownie at Cake Stories

Salted caramel has to be the greatest invention since the mighty pizza was born. So put pools of it on top of a gorgeous and fudgy chocolate brownie and you’ve hit gold. Cake Stories, I take my hat off to you.

4. Waffles and crepes at Kaspas

Whether you’re a waffle person, or prefer the humble crepe, you shall find tasty joy at Kaspas. Opt for the classic lemon and sugar, or the more adventurous peanut butter and banana. Drool.

5. Hot chocolate at Cake Stories

That’s right, Cake Stories is back again (it’s amazing, okay). This time though, it’s the hot chocolate that I’m raving about. Made with melted chocolate drops, they’re topped with delicious whipped cream, marshmallows and salted caramel sauce.

6. Cupcakes at the Great British Cupcakery

Think of a cupcake flavour and the likelihood is these guys will have it. From Eton Mess, to Lemon Meringue, it’s my favourite place to munch my way towards a food coma.

7. Rocky Road at Arlo

Be prepared for a slice the size of a small child. Am I exaggerating? Maybe, but wow they’re big. Not to mention they’re oh-so-good.

8. Milkshake at Cafe 1901

These are perfect for a nice filling shake, without the subsequent coma. Perfect to indulge in with one of their tasty brunches, Cafe 1905 are the masters of indulgent Sunday mornings.

9. Traybakes at Olive and Bean

I’m very much of the mind that chocolate on top of more chocolate makes the best dessert. The Olive and Bean seem to agree. Their mega traybakes come in loads of incredible flavours, including Oreo, honeycomb, and salted caramel popcorn (yes, that is a thing).

10. Vegan Sticky Toffee Pudding at The Bohemian

Vegans rejoice! The Bohemian have hit the spot with their warm sticky toffee pudding. Plus, it comes with vegan ice cream. Nom.

11. Frozen Yogurt at Igloo

Healthy dessert? Yes please! Igloo serves up the most delicious frozen yogurt, which you can top with all your favourite treats. If it’s healthy I can have two, right?

12. Tiramisu at Sapori

Thanks to the taxi driver that recommended I try this on a 3am ride home. For the best tiramisu in the city, come to Sapori (and while you’re there it’d be a crime not to have pizza too).

13. Ice cream at Mark Toney and Co

There’s a reason this ice cream has been a Geordie favourite for 120 years. This isn’t any ice cream – it’s award-winning ice cream. That’ll be five scoops, please.

14. Brownies at the Brownie Bar

A bar dedicated solely to brownies? Well that’s my weekend sorted. Whether you fancy a brownie, blondie, or both (there’s no such thing as too much chocolate), there are plenty of flavours here to indulge in.

15. Doughnuts at Greggs

Would it be an article on Newcastle if it didn’t feature Greggs? No, my friend, no it wouldn’t. Behold the humble doughnut; because sometimes, the simple things in life are the best.
