Here’s How To Break Up With Someone You Still Love

Breaking up with someone is never easy. You care about this person, and they care about you but they just aren’t right anymore. There are a lot of different reasons you may need to break up with someone and it is a shame that someone that once meant so much to you no longer fits into your life. That being said, there is a right way and a lot of wrong ways to break up with someone. Here’s how to break up with someone you still love:

The wrong ways include:

1. By text.

There is nothing more impersonal than a text, if you ever cared for this person you cannot think that this is the way to go.

2. Ghosting.

This is just plain mean. Ghosting someone seems like an easy way out for you and maybe if you’ve only had one or two dates it’d be acceptable. But, if you are dating this person and disappear on them, they are either going to worry about your safety or worry what they suddenly did wrong to make you go away.

3. Voicemail.

At least give them a chance to respond, they might want to know why and they deserve closure.

Also you don’t know who is going to hear that voicemail or when, there might be a very important reason they don’t pick up the phone don’t make their bad day worse.

4. Social Media.

You can’t announce your break up to your friends, family, and colleagues before you’ve announced it to your partner.

5. After sex.

If you don’t know why this is bad, there is no helping you.

6. In the middle of a holiday/weekend visit.

I have a friend who went to visit her boyfriend for a weekend and he broke up with her as soon as she was there. She was left sharing a bed with him crying unable to get home. Nobody wants that.

Unfortunately, there is only one right way to break up with somebody and it is one of the most difficult. You need to sit down together and talk through it, there is no way around it. Find a good time for both of you, make sure they aren’t under extreme temporary stress like deadlines and that you have no big events coming up. Then spend time explaining to your partner why you think it’s time to let go and remember not to give them any hope for the relationship because if they love you they will hold on to that tiny maybe and won’t be able to move on.
