Everything You Need To Know About Going Platinum Blonde

Thinking about going blonder for the summer? Wondering if blondes really do have more fun? Why not find out?! We have put together a guide of the things that people don’t really tell you when you’re going platinum blonde – so you know what to expect.

Are you sure platinum blonde is the right blonde for you?

Not everyone can pull off the Kim Kardashian platinum blonde hair colour, and that’s okay! After all, we don’t all have a hair stylist on hand to fix our regrowth or constantly make sure our hair looks picture-perfect. Going platinum blonde is a big decision, and something you should think about as it will be difficult to reverse once it’s done. Why not try out a wig or downloading an app that allows you to try out different hair colours before the real thing? If you’re sure, find an image on Instagram of your hair-crush to show to your hairdresser about the style you are looking to recreate.

Have you thought about your skin tone?

Your skin tone plays a big role in deciding what tone of platinum blonde will look good on you. For example, warm platinum is great for people with fairer skin because the shade is closer to their complexion. However, a more modern, pale platinum (think Kim K) works on people with slightly darker, warmer skin tones.

How do you usually wear your make up?

Red lips look great with bleached, platinum hair. Too much bronzer? Not-so-much! If you love being tanned and bronzed, platinum hair may not be the best option for you. Instead, consider going for a beachy, golden blonde look.

Have you thought about how harsh bleach is on your hair?

Of all the colouring methods out there, bleach is potentially the most damaging, and therefore should ideally always be done by a professional. It’s also the only way to achieve the platinum blonde look that you want. Repeated bleaching can lead to the loss of moisture in your hair. This means dry, brittle, inelastic hair, and hair that is more susceptible to breakage and split ends. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go platinum! It just means that you will have to consider showing your new hair a little more TLC.

Have you considered your roots?

If you have taken the plunge and gone platinum (yay!) but, what now? When will you have to go back to the salon for a touch up? Ideally, you should be visiting your colourist for a root touch up every 6 to 8 weeks in order to keep your colour looking as fresh as possible. Think carefully about whether this is economically and practically an option for you.

Are you willing to switch up your shampoo and conditioning regime?

You will want to start using a shampoo and conditioner that are sulfate-free.  Sulphates strip the toner from your hair very rapidly (after just 1-2 washes), which means that your new hair might turn an unwanted brassy colour overnight. Talk to your colourist about their recommendations for the perfect purple shampoo for your hair. You will also want to start incorporating a hair mask and/or toner to condition your hair and to avoid split, dry ends.

If going platinum blonde still seems worth it to you, after all of these considerations, we say: go for it! Going blonde is addictive though so if you’re still not convinced, why not try going slightly lighter and building up to going platinum?
