10 Ways To Spice Up Your Drab Uni Halls

Moving into uni halls is a big step in life and can feel pretty scary. That’s why it’s so important to make your halls feel like your own little safe haven, and there are so many simple ways to do so. Here are our top 10 ways to spice up your drab uni halls!

1. Make Your Bed Your Favourite Place

Considering most uni halls bedrooms don’t include a sofa, this makes your bed all the more essential. Make sure that your bed is decorated to match your personality by getting a new sheet and a set of duvet and pillow covers to match your tastes. The main thing though, is that your bed is comfortable, and one of the best tips we can offer to achieve maximum comfort is to get a duvet a size larger than your bed. For example, if you have a single bed, get a double duvet, if you have a double bed, get a king duvet etc – this will make the world of difference we promise!

2. Put Up Photos As Little Reminders Of Home

Sadly, uni is a time where friends and family are separated, so having photos of happy memories with your loved ones decorating your room can make a huge difference when you’re feeling a bit homesick. Have a scroll through your camera roll and get them printed iso you can put them up on your wall. This is your time to get creative, so pin the photos in a heart shape, or stick them on a pin-board along with other bits and bobs like concert tickets, leaflets, and other memorabilia. It’ll help to give your room more personality and feel more like home.

3. Make Your Walls More Exciting By Getting a Pinboard

As previously mentioned, pinboards are great decorative options for uni halls. Some halls don’t allow posters or paper stuck directly to walls, so pin boards are the perfect alternative. Some halls even provide pinboards too! Cover your boards with photos, concert tickets, wristbands, stickers and even random bits of art – the possibilities are endless! Not only are pinboards a great way to show off your personality and interests, they also make a great talking point with friends when they come to visit your room!

4. Get Organised!

Uni is the perfect time to finally use those coloured highlighters and cute notebooks you bought in high school but never used. It doesn’t have to be expensive either, many supermarkets and high street stores offer cute stationery for those on a budget. All you need is a couple of ring-binders for any papers you’re given, a couple of notebooks, some pens and you’re on your way to an organised uni room. This will make the studying you’ll eventually do much easier to start!

5. We Can’t Stress This Enough…Soft Lighting!!

This is one of the easiest ways to spice up any uni room! Most halls provide a basic lamp and feature the usual harsh fluorescent main light, but that won’t make for a relaxing space. Invest in some fairy lights to hang around your walls or around your desk, we promise it will make your room so much more relaxing and fun to hang out in. There are lots of cheap options in most high street stores and online, and there are so many ways to use fairy lights creatively!

6. Give Your Feet A Treat With Fluffy Rugs

This is definitely one of the easiest ways to make your uni halls feel more homely and look much prettier! They provide some much-needed insulation in the winter months and provide some additional style to your room. There are plenty of cheap options for cute rugs in stores and online, so have a look around and find a colour and style that fits the decor in your room. We promise it’ll make the world of difference to your room.

7. Trendy Wire Grid, Perfect For Notes

Wire grids are becoming a very popular staple in uni halls! They make it so easy to pin notes temporarily and are also very easy to decorate. The simple and sleek design makes them a great addition to any bedroom and they are adaptable to fit any kind of style. The grids look great above desks and with only some small pegs, you can pin up notes, reminders, sticky notes and more!

8. Plants, Plants And More Plants!

This is probably our favourite way to decorate ANY uni room, and provide a lot of benefits! Not only do plants look lovely and bring life to your halls, but they also make the air more fresh and clean. That promotes sleep and helps you concentrate on your uni work. A lot of indoor plants are very easy to maintain (which is a bonus!) with most plants only needing to be watered sparingly.

9. Fill Up Your Walls With Tapestries

Tapestries are the quickest and easiest way to fill up your walls. Many tapestries online are 150cm x 200cm, aka, the size of a king size bed! They’re very easy to hang up, requiring only a few small pins, or double-sided adhesive strips. There are numerous designs, colours, and styles that add lots of decoration to any room!

10. No Smoke…and No Flames…With Flameless Candles!

Sadly, uni halls don’t allow candles in rooms (which is probably a good idea!). Fortunately, flameless candles are a great alternative, not only do they mimic real candles brilliantly, but they’re also available in store, online and are cheap. Just like fairy lights, they provide lovely dim lighting which is perfect for chilling in the evenings. The flameless candles are also a great addition to any desk or bedside table and look really cute too!

So those were a few tips on how to spice up your university halls! Even following only a few of them will get you well on your way to having the pad of your dreams, and make coming home after a tiring day of classes or a long slog in the library very welcoming.
