8 Tips For College Kids Moving Out Of Student Housing

Are you dreading the day you have to move out of your student accomodation? Worried that something will go wrong? Here are eight helpful tips to make sure that everything goes smoothly when you say goodbye to your student dorm!

1. Clean your shower drain

Often, your university will email you a list of things you must clean up and remove from your dorm before you move out of your student housing. If you’re lucky enough to have an ensuite in your room, you might have to clean your shower drain! Even if this job isn’t assigned to you, it’s a good idea to make sure your bathroom is clean for the next student who will move in there the coming term.

2. Do it on time

Some universities will give you a specific date and time for you to move out of student accomodation. Pay attention to your university guidelines! You might actually get a fine if you don’t notify your university that you’ve moved out on time.

3. Donate things you don’t need

Instead of throwing your things out and adding to the mountains of abandoned sheets and kitchenware left by other students, why not donate your things? This is a great way to give to people in need whilst disposing of items you no longer have any use for!

4. Don’t lose anything!

Check and double check that you haven’t left anything behind! Once you’ve moved out of your student housing, it will be tough to get permission to enter the building again! Check under beds and in closets to be completely sure that you haven’t left any important or sentimental possessions behind.

5. Don’t leave your key/card inside

If you’re loading your packed boxes into a car outside, make sure you always have your keys, or keycard, on your person! You don’t want to lock yourself out of your student housing halfway through packing up—especially when dozens of other students are trying to squeeze their cars outside of their housing blocks! This will create havoc and force you to stay on campus for longer than you intend to. Stay on top of the moving out process by keeping your keys in your pockets!

6. Have a car prepared

A car, and a second pair of hands, will make moving out a smooth and efficient process! Doing it alone is difficult. Why not ask a friend or family member to help you out with boxes and transport? This will make packing up and moving out a quicker and easier process. It will also ensure that you get back home with no difficulties! Then, all you need to do is unpack everything again!

7. Have a plan for next year

Moving out of your student housing might make you think about the next year of your degree. Be prepared for the following semester by researching student accomodation and applying for it as soon as possible! It’s important to live in a safe environment, and it is beneficial to live close to campus. Student housing is very competitive, so it is incredibly important to make sure that you have an accomodation plan for the coming year!

8. Say goodbye to your flatmates and neighbours

Finally, say goodbye to the people you shared your student housing with! You don’t know if you’ll share with these people again, or how often you’ll see them between your studies! Having a pizza or movie night before you move out is a fun and memorable way to say goodbye to the people who helped you throughout the semester or year.
