The Ultimate Uni Packing List All Freshers Need

Writing a uni packing list is such a feat and the packing itself is even more so. It can sometimes be overwhelming to pack up your whole life and move it somewhere new. When writing my uni packing list I separated my list into sections and went from there. The categories I used were the bedroom, clothes, kitchen, bathroom, studying and miscellaneous.

1. Bedroom

Our bedrooms are our safe havens and it is vital that we bring all the correct equipment to kit it out. Before moving into your uni accommodation be sure to check the size of your bed and what furnishings and facilities that are already there so you don’t pack anything you don’t need. This category is probably the most essential on your uni packing list so do not forget any of these things!

  • Duvet
  • Duvet cover and pillowcases
  • Pillow
  • Desk lamp
  • Room decorations
  • Photographs
  • Doorstop
  • Laundry basket
  • Cushions

2. Clothes

You need to prepare for all kinds of events and weather. You’ll be at uni during the colder months and so you want to have plenty of layers as well as clothes for partying.

  • Trousers/ Skirts
  • Dresses
  • T-shirts/ tips
  • Shoes (boots, trainers, slip on shoes)
  • Clothes hangers
  • Winter coat
  • Hats, scarves and gloves
  • Jackets
  • Fancy dress outfits
  • Bags (backpacks, tote bag, clutches)
  • Loungewear
  • Pyjamas

3. Kitchen

University Kitchens have the bare minimum usually, cupboards, ovens, hobs, microwaves, toasters and sometimes kettles. Again this is a matter of checking what appliances you are going to be supplied with and then providing your own where necessary.

  • Glasses
  • Mugs
  • Dining set (plates and bowls)
  • Pots and pans
  • Oven gloves
  • Cheese grater
  • Teatowels
  • Cutlery
  • Utensils for cooking ( such as masher, wooden spoon, whisk, vegetable peeler, slotted spoon, spatula, bottle opener, tin opener and fish slice)
  • Colander
  • Dish clothes or sponges
  • Tupperware
  • Chopping board
  • Baking trays
  • Washing up liquid
  • Bin bags

4. Bathroom

Some uni accommodation comes equipped with ensuite bathrooms and others have shared bathrooms. If you have your own bathroom you may need to provide certain things such as a bath mat or toilet brush.

  • Toiletries (such as toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and face wash)
  • Bath mat
  • Towels and hand towels
  • Flannels
  • Hair dryer and other appliances
  • Toilet roll
  • Makeup and brushes
  • First aid kit
  • Razors
  • Nail scissors
  • Personal medications etc

5. Studying

The main aspect of uni is, of course, studying so packing materials for studying are pivotal. This category also includes general desk items that you may need. Of course, if there is anything else you require for study then be sure to pack those too but this is just what I would recommend.

See Also
  • Planner
  • Pens and Pencils
  • Notebooks
  • Sticky notes
  • Sellotapes
  • Paper clips
  • Staple and staplers
  • Highlighters
  • Folders
  • Hole punch and reinforcers
  • Pins
  • Flashcards

6. Miscellaneous

These are bits and bobs that do not really fit into any category but are still necessary. This also includes admin things that you may need to do in preparation for university!

  • Umbrella
  • A bin (dependent on whether or not they are already provided)
  • Batteries
  • Phone charger
  • Laptop chargers
  • Any other electrical goods
  • Playing cards
  • Over door hoods
  • An ID of some sort
  • National Insurance Number
  • Headphones
  • Hot water bottle
  • Sewing kit
  • Extension lead
  • Clothes horse
  • Bus pass
  • Change over your bank account to a student account

Furthermore, I would advise doing a food shop that is going to be delivered on the day or pick it some food up on the way otherwise you’ll be pretty hungry for your first few days.

Did we have anything on our list that you missed? Is there anything we have forgotten? Let us know in the comments below.
