The Best 10 Societies To Join At Bournemouth University

The best thing about Bournemouth University is the diversity it allows you to have. When it comes to societies, if you don’t have one suited to you, make one. Joining a society allows you to have a group which you belong to and you can go out with them and do so many activities and opportunities outside of your course. Whatever you are in to – there is a society to cover it.

From making new friends and socialising, to having fun away from your studies, or trying brand new things – it’ll help your CV to stand out when you graduate too. Here are the a few of the best societies at Bournemouth University.

1. Dance Society

This society belongs to the 5* group – the top rated societies and clubs in the uni. They practice 6 different styles of dance, including:  Ballet, Contemporary, Commercial Modern, Jazz, Street, and Tap. Between the groups, they have won many awards and are always successful in competitions. There is definitely a style for you in this society. You get a real sense of team spirit and belonging with the dance group – both on and off stage. The society is a great place to dance at a competitive level, and to make amazing memories with your team.

2. BU Falcons (Cheerleading)

Every October the BU Falcons hold tryouts where you can join the team. They are a multi-award winning society and cheer for many of the sports teams at BU. They have multiple cheer teams including a hip-hop and pom team. Anyone who joins the falcons feels really included and will first hand experience an amazing, involved university life.

3. Bobcats (American Football)

The Bobcats are one of the most talked about clubs at BU. Everyone watches their games and everyone wants to be a part of the team. They are one of the most competitive, challenging and exciting teams. They take any ability from pro to beginner. It is one of the most up and coming sports in the UK. But, not only do they partake in the american football games, they are huge in the university life.

4. Ultimate Frisbee

You may be slightly confused at what ultimate frisbee actually is. It is a really inclusive, fun and diverse sport. They welcome all sporting abilities and have regular training sessions to get up to speed. Also, they have a really good team social life so it is not train, train, train. And, they won the league undefeated last year.

5. Performing Arts Society

PARTS for short, has been a student union society for over 17 years. It is an award winning society as well as belonging to the 5* group. It combines both Bournemouth University students and Arts University Bournemouth Students. They have performed Grease, American Idiot and Half A Sixpense (which was performed at the Shelly Theatre).

6. BU Football Team

There are both men’s and women’s football teams that you can tryout for at Bournemouth University. Even better, the men’s football programme is ran and coached by AFC Bournemouth. The Women’s team is coached by AFC Bournemouth Academy captains. They have had a really successful past in BU and are great to go and watch for a day out. There are also scholarships available through this group for new and returning students.

7. Coffee Society

Coffee is a huge part of university life. If you don’t like coffee then you will by the end of the first year. This society is one of the noncompetitive societies where you meet others with the same interests as you. The group throw events and have chats while enjoying a hot beverage. They work closely with South Coast Roast and have regular meetings and seminars – all about coffee!

8. Different Abilities Alliance

This group creates a pressure free zone where anyone can join to work on socialising, informing, having fun and making a difference. People can fund raise for charities, play games or just sit and chat with others that you may not normally meet. The society prides itself on being a way for people dealing with different abilities as well as allies to find and make new friends.

9. African And Caribbean Society

This cultural society is one of many that celebrate students that are from different cultures around the world. They are one of many societies that put a huge event on for World Celebration and you can improve the welfare of students. It is a really inclusive society and they are also a huge part of black history month.

10. Nerve Media

Although it is not technically a society, Nerve media is a huge recognised name around the campus. You don’t have to study journalism to be included in this. There are Magazines, Radio, Newspapers and many more platforms. Everything is done to a professional standard and the radio even goes to FM for two weeks a year. Although it is challenging you will have the best time and make amazing friends joining any Nerve Media platform.
