International Woman’s Day will be on Friday the 8th of Match this year. This is a time where we pay tribute and remember all of the women before us that have fought for freedom and equality. This movement is to empower women globally. During this time, its important to remeber all of the beautiful female culture that empower woman today.

We don’t always have to be cast just for eye candy, or as the nagging mother or wife. Or even just simply cast so that the main male lead can have a love affair. Its important for us to acknowledge all of the strong successful, intelligent women in the world and its crucial that we are fairly represented in pop culture such a movies.

These are My 10 favourite movies which empower women in honour of International Women’s Day.

1.  Thelma & Louise

This crime story highlights themes such as friendship, love, sex, crime and general female empowerment. The movie empowers women basically by showing women who get shit done without having to be saved or rescued by men. They’re truly living for themselves.

2. Beloved

Starring a young Oprah Winfrey, this movie identifies the meaning of being a strong black mother. Its sort of a hard watch but its definitely inspiring.

3. Oceans 8

Oceans 8 is a spin off movie following oceans 11, a movie about a crime job committed by 11 men. The great thing about this movie is it shows the diversity and complexity of women. Yes they can be intelligent and witty, and emotional. And they all have different characters. They also slip in a few comments aimed at society which amazing if you’re paying attention.

4. Girls Trip

Girls trip is just a fun, non-serious movie about 4 girls going on a trip together. All four characters are completely different from each other and they  are all really successful. I love this movie because its easy to watch and represents whats important in a female friendship.

5. I Am Not An Easy Man

I am not an easy man is a french comedy about a narcissistic chauvinistic man who views on women are sexist and disgusting. He views them only as sex objects and something to conquer, along with many of the men in this money. One day though he bumps his head and is wakes up in a world where women are in charge. Its hilarious and fun, and highlights some real issues in today’s society.

6. Suffragette’s

This period drama is based in the 1920’s. The story covers working class feminists who fight for equality and do so by any means necessary. They’re viewed basically as terrorists but in the end life gets a lot better for women. They spend nights in prisons make plans at night and sneak around town fighting for equality and justice. Its a truly inspiring adventure filled with entertainment and emotion.

9. Black Panther

Black panther is a super hero movie adaptation. Its great for many reasons, mainly that it looks absolutely beautiful and the cast is mostly black. But also the women in this movie are utter bad asses, they’re seen as assets and part of a movement rather than just a piece of mean. Their skills are tight a so is their intelligence.

10. Charlies Angels (2000)

Charlies Angels is an early 00’s movie adaptation staring Cameron Dias, Lucy Lu and Drew Barrymore. All women are seen as as strong and powerful on and off screen.
