8 Low Maintenance Plants To Brighten Your Student Bedroom

It’s no secret that student accommodation can be uncomfortable at the best of times. University bedrooms are often difficult to make homely and their cold, dark and cramped conditions mean it can be hard to keep plants alive in them. However, houseplants can instantly brighten any room and make spaces feel more welcoming. Below is a selection of low maintenance plants that are perfect for your student bedroom.

Lucky Bamboo

Keeping Lucky Bamboo is known to relieve stress and bring happiness and prosperity to those that live in its presence. The plant, which looks like a traditional bamboo stick, can be kept as a single stem or as part of a larger arrangement. While it can be planted in soil, most Lucky Bamboo thrives when placed only in a few inches of water, making it one of the easiest low maintenance plants to care for.

Cacti

Cacti have been popular houseplants for a while now since they are cute-looking, relatively low-cost and require little effort to maintain them. Most succulent plants come pre-potted and are ready to be placed by a sunny window and fed with water directly into the soil. Just watch out for any spikes!

Jade Plant

Jade plants, otherwise known as money plants are known to be resilient and long-lived, making them great for students wanting to spruce up their bedrooms with low maintenance plants. Often used in Chinese Feng Shui, Jade plants signify growth and are used to harmonize their surroundings. It is believed that a long-lived Jade plant is a sign of financial and experiential wealth and prosperity.

Sweetheart Plant

The Sweetheart Plant, also known as the Heartleaf Philodendron is a climber plant and one of the most popular indoor plants. This tropical heart-shaped leaf-climber simply requires moist soil and a spot out of direct sunlight. Potted in a hanging basket or placed on a bookshelf, this low maintenance plant can be draped across a variety of spaces to bring some life into a simple student bedroom.

Peace Lily

Peace Lilies are beautiful house plants with white flowers that cleanse the air around them which keeps the room feeling fresh and uplifted. They are native to tropical environments, so thrive well in warmer rooms away from direct sunlight. Keeping the soil damp, spraying the leaves with water and pruning unhealthy leaves will ensure this plant blooms in your student room year-round.

Areca Palm

Areca Palms, known as Golden Cane Palms are South Indian native plants that are often used for bright interiors. While a full-grown Areca can be expensive to purchase, smaller potted versions have a more affordable price tag and still provide large amounts of lush foliage. The plant requires regular watering and a dose of time-release fertilizer in spring, keeping the care routine manageable for a busy student.

Orchids

Orchid flowers are often overlooked by students due to their slightly higher price tag and their slightly daunting reputation as the queen of the plants. Surprisingly though, these are low maintenance plants that only require watering sparingly and indirect sunlight. What’s more, they will last much longer than any ordinary flowers you will buy.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is an amazing plant to keep in your student bedroom since not only is it one of the most low maintenance plants, but it can be used for its health benefits too. To care for your Aloe Vera, place it in an area with bright, indirect sunlight and water heavily every two weeks once the soil has dried out. To use the gel, simply cut a leaf from as close to the stem as possible and apply the gel topically onto irritated areas of skin.
