5 Cute DIY Projects For Your Home You Can Do In A Day

Sometimes we gotta live on a budget, other times – we just really want to give Grandma’s old dresser some TLC. Either way, DIY projects are a part of life for all but the rich. And if you’re looking for a way to give your home a quick refresh, here are some cute DIY projects you can get done in a day*!

*If you don’t have to work, and ‘Bunnings’ is just around the corner.

1. Repainting Old Furniture

If you have a small side-table, a coffee table, or bookshelf – this is one way to change things up quick. You can strip down previously painted wood in a few hours, and have it refinished in a few more – given you’re not taking on a huge project with turned legs or heaps of grooves to navigate.

You can paint an antique bookshelf black to modernise it. Strip back a old-painted dresser for a scandi-inspired look. Make that bleh side-table into a feature piece by painting it a bright colour.

Whatever the project, if you have the day free, this is one classic and cute DIY.

2. DIY Terrariums

You know those old glass jars you were going to recycle? How about you fill them with soil and tiny plants instead!

Terrariums are miniature gardens that can be statement pieces on any coffee table! All you need are some old jars, labels peeled off and then cleaned up with some eucalyptus oil. Then, you can go dig up the garden outside – or just pop down to our favourite hardware store and stock up on some mini plants and potting mix.

3. Paint A Feature Wall

Okay, so a whole room might be a bit much for a day. But a wall? We can do that.

All you’ve gotta do is lay down some sheets, grab some paint – rollers and brushes – and painters tape.

If you’re feeling like your house needs a new vibe, this is a massive transformation in any room with a quick and easy DIY.

4. Wallpaper On A Dresser

Okay, it doesn’t have to be a dresser – any flat surface, really. The back of a bookshelf, an entire wall if you’re really committed.

But, if you don’t feel like painting and sanding, painting and sanding – just wallpaper it! Not only does it offer pattern and colour, it can add so much personality to an old piece of furniture. You can pick a tropical print, a polka dot wallpaper, or something chinoiserie. There are even full mural options if you’re looking to wallpaper something on a grand scale!

There are also super-easy options that self-adhere – no glue required!

5. DIY Jewellery Hooks

Do you have some old wood lying around? It can be discarded timber, a jagged piece for a more rustic look, or whatever else comes to mind. Be creative – it’s DIY.

Next step? Go found yourself some hooks! My recommendation is to use old furniture knobs (like the kind you find at ‘Ishka’ or the dollar store), but really, there’s no limit. If you spot some antique black hooks or old handles that would work, snatch those up. Maybe you want something more glam in gold.

Whatever your aesthetic, just screw them into the slab of wood and viola! You have some cute jewellery hooks to hang on your wall!

All of these ideas are pretty simple in essence, but the nature of the DIY is to create whatever you want – don’t be afraid to push the rules with any of these ideas!
