10 Cute Date Ideas To Try Around UoB

As nights get colder, students get closer and on those beautiful yet rare days off, the UoB campus provides a surprising number of cute date opportunities for the lucky-in-love. Whether you’re a history buff, a sports-addict, or a total foodie, the Birmingham campus has a lot to offer; so keep reading for ten cute date ideas around UoB!

1. Take a nice walk around the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

With workshops, concerts, talks, tours, exhibits and even a book club, The Barber Institute is a dream date for the creative-types. Established for ‘the study and encouragement of art and music’, it’s a pretty gorgeous place to walk around with someone else who just ‘gets it’ ♥.

2. Stroll through the Winterbourne Botanic Garden.

A genuine hidden gem, the university’s botanic garden boasts seven acres of stunning greenery, housing over 6000 plant species, a hazelnut tunnel, orchid house, woodland walk and a romantic 1930s Japanese bridge. Picnic under the cherry blossom in spring or go looking for the hidden gate that backs on to the lake. Bring your uni ID for free entry!

3. Order a sharer plate at Joe’s Bar.

If you fancy a cheap and cheerful lunch date, in a place with a good atmosphere, look no further than Joe’s in the Student Guild. Snuggle up in a booth, order a sharer plate and spend a few hours in each other’s company for no more than a fiver.

4. Enjoy mulled wine and mistletoe with The Winter Spectacular.

What’s more romantic than mulled wine, fairy wheels, mince pies and mistletoe? It’s like someone took Love Actually and The Notebook and smushed them together and quite frankly, I love it.

5. Watch the Vale Fireworks and maybe go on a funfair ride or two!

Visit the funfair, go on a few rides, maybe win a teddy-bear or two, before the fireworks start later on in the evening. The display never fails to amaze the thousands that turn out, so find a good spot in the crowds, cuddle up and enjoy the show together. There’s something quite sweet about watching fireworks with the one you love.

6. Find a good spot (there are plenty on campus) and have a picnic on the greens!

One of the most surprising things about the Birmingham campus is the amount of greenery there is. There are so many good little spots for a picnic for two, with the Chancellors court being a firm favourite.

7. Do the UoB photography challenge together.

One of the best things about the University of Birmingham is how much there is to discover behind the red-brick walls. The official UoB Instagram page holds a weekly photography competition, inviting students and staff to submit their own photos under the weekly theme. So why not make a fun date out of it and go exploring with your date and a camera? You might even end up with a winning photo!

8. Grab some Starbucks and have a study break in Muirhead Tower.

For the couple who work hard and play every now and then – sometimes a simple Starbucks date says it all. Meet in the Muirhead tower for a library break or in between seminars, grab a sofa upstairs and have a catch-up or get to know each other. Easy breezy.

9. Wander through University Square’s Farmer’s Market.

Typically held on the last Wednesday of each month, the Farmer’s Market is a food-obsessed couple’s dream. Held in the university square, you can wander around hand-in-hand with a hot drink and a pastry and see what Birmingham’s local stalls have to offer.

10. Observe and learn about the night sky at UoB’s own Observatory.

Finally, the date to top all dates; a trip to the university’s very own Observatory is on the cards for a lucky few if you fancy a more ‘intellectual’ date in the Poynting Building. Learn about the night sky from the experts and sit in on the Q&A together if that’s your thing, finishing off the night with a chance to peek through our very own Grubb telescope. I mean, what’s more romantic than star-gazing?
