Memes have become a cultural phenomenon. They play a big part in the expression and communication of the younger generations. They come and go, some lasting longer than others, but the big ones always serve as a snapshot into the popular consciousness. Here are 10 current memes that will make you LOL.
Every child knows the feeling of trying to convey something that feels very important to your parents, and them not getting it. And every parent knows the feeling of being somewhat out of touch, of honestly not having a clue what the hell their kid is talking about. The generational gap leads to several differences in conceptions and priorities. Memes are a great example of this, so what better than a meme that’s about that divide?
It’s two images, one of Quelin Blackwell crying (representing the child) and another of Ms. Juicy from Little Women: Atlanta (representing the parent). The neutral expression on Ms. Juciy’s face somehow becomes disturbed when used in this context.
This one centres on the Scooby-Doo character Shaggy, depicting him as an all-powerful being. It started when the character beat up an entire biker gang in an animated film. From then jokes were made about his ‘power levels’, in reference to Animes that depicted that sort of thing. Shaggy is apparently always holding back, only using a small percentage of his power. Even that is God-like.
The format varies but the most common manifestations of this meme depict still images from cast interviews from the early 2000s Scooby-Doo film. The actors talk about what it was like to work with Shaggy, and the idea is that the actor who portrayed him. Mathew Lillard was in fact possessed by the spirit of Shaggy whenever he was on set.
Not exactly a meme that’s applicable to many real-life scenarios, it’s one of those memes that are just about themselves. It has a life of its own seemingly, and who knows where it’s heading, if anywhere.
This one’s pretty straightforward. Somebody posts an image of a well-known person, object, film, or whatever, and they ask “What/who is this? Wrong answers only”. People then comment, giving their incorrect answers with the aim of comedic effect. It’s an inclusive kind of meme, more so than most others because you don’t have to be a ‘meme-maker’ to get in on it.
If you see someone make one of these posts, you can just hitch your wagon to it, as it were, and if your reply is ha-ha funny, then you’ll reap the rewards. The rewards being some likes and appreciative comments. We all need some validation, right?
This comes from a video recorded by RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, Jasmine Masters. In the video, Marsters goes on a rant about friends of hers who become intoxicated when socialising. During the rant, she interrupts herself mid-sentence saying “And I — Oop!”. She then goes on to say that she hit her balls. The video was published in 2015 and has gained over 149,00 views since.
The meme is used to express shock when something unexpected happens and as a reaction to what someone else posts.
Memes are so prevalent that they’ve become categorised. This meme falls under the phrasal template category, apparently. It’s used to mock people who give out unsolicited opinions, or as a humorous way to depict someone’s passion for a subject or idea of any kind. The idea is that nobody asked for the opinion and the person just wanted to bring it up.
So it goes “Literally nobody:” followed by no text, followed by “Me:” after which a ramble, rant, or statement is exposited. There are sometimes extra phrases in between like “Not a single soul”.
The Spider-Think or Learning to be Spider-Man meme depicts a frame from the animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse in which rookie Spider-Man Miles Morales watches and mimics every move that his mentor Peter Parker makes.
It’s used to show two people, groups, entities, films, trends and more, where one is the lesser looking to mimic it’s better. The one looker usually symbolises a pale imitation that is struggling to live up to the original, like Pepsi looking to Coke, for instance.
ASCII Art (a method of composing images by using the symbols, letters, and numbers found in the American Standard Code for Information Exchange, or your keyboard) has been used in the formatting of many memes. This is one of them. In “Today’s Tea” someone says something controversial or bold, a “hot take” if you will, which is embedded in an ASCII Art depiction of a steaming cup of tea.
This refers to a scene in the videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, in which the protagonist CJ is blackmailed by a corrupt cop and finds himself in a bad neighbourhood as the player takes over. He says “Ah shit, here we go again…” and then proceeds to lament the position he’s in. It’s mostly used in reference to repeating confrontations.
These are supercuts/compilations from the TV show Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction, hosted by Jonathan Frakes. The premise of the show is that Frakes presents a scenario in each episode that is either real or fake. He invites the audience to guess and at the end tells them whether they were wrong or right.
A supercut of Frakes telling the viewers that they’re wrong was made as a reaction video. Apart from this, Frakes asking the viewers hypothetical questions and his puns have also fueled many memes.
Another Spider-Man related meme. This one depicts several villains from the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon, all with derpy smiles on their faces. It is used in memes involving a group of male friends doing various activities, usually with some sort of hi-jinks involved. It has been used in many wholesome memes, celebrating friendship and comradery.
Yep. Just Keanu Reeves. The man’s taken the internet by storm, especially in 2019. He’s well liked and loved by many because of the films he’s been in and because of how he genuinely seems to be a very nice person. The man’s been the subject of many memes over many years now. There’s sad Keanu, which is a photo of him sitting alone on a bench eating a sandwich.
There’s conspiracy Keanu which depicts his character from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure with a scared expression accompanied by a conspiracy or shallow philosophical idea. His character Jonh Wick from the films of the same name has become highly popular, considered one of the greatest bad-asses of our time. Most recently memes have been made about him portraying a character in the upcoming videogame CyberPunk 2077.
