As clichéd as it sounds, age is just a number right? Well, this doesn’t stop some people turning their noses up at romantic relationships where there is an age difference. Sure there are benefits of being in a relationship with someone the same age as you: you are both at the same stage of your lives so you can both understand what the other person is going through; you can also grow and evolve together. However, speaking from personal experience, an age difference in relationships can actually be better and it really isn’t THAT big of a deal. The list below will prove why (for the benefit of this article, I am going to refer to an age difference as one partner being a lot older or a lot younger than the other rather than there being only a few years’ difference).
Ever felt like you have outgrown your friends? That they are too immature and are not ready to commit to having more responsibility in their life like you are? Well an age difference in a relationship isn’t that big of a deal in this instance. If you are very mature and are with an older partner, this means you can connect with them on a deeper level and be stimulated by their conversations and life experiences. Likewise, if you are still young at heart and full to the brim with energy, then a younger partner would be more compatible for you – someone with similar interests to you and who wants to do the same activities.
Again another cliché but it is true. Your feelings are not operated by a light switch. They cannot be turned off just like that. Love is something precious and not everyone gets to experience it. So if you do fall in love with someone and they happen to be younger or older than you then it really isn’t that big of a deal. All that matters is that you and your partner know that what you have is special and that you are both committed to making it last. This is one of the most important things to remember as to why an age difference in relationships don’t matter!

It is important for one partner to avoid mothering the other (typically the older partner), or for one partner to be too dependent on the other (typically the younger one). For this can lead to a power imbalance which is very unhealthy. However, as long as each partner looks on the other as their equal, then age really isn’t that big of a deal.
Age really isn’t that big of a deal in a relationship compared to other factors. What is really important is that you both see the future of your relationship heading in the right direction. Communication is key to ensuring age-gap relationships work. Be honest about how you feel about settling down, living together, having children etc. If you agree on factors such as these, then at the end of the day, an age difference in relationships shouldn’t matter.
To conclude, those couples with an age difference in their relationship will always attract more attention than those couples of the same, or similar ages. But block out the haters and listen to your heart, if you are happy then it really isn’t anybody else’s business.
