A Gift Guide For That One Difficult Relative Who Seems To Hate Everything

There’s nothing quite like spending hours trying to find the perfect gift for one of your relatives, only to get told that they’ve never really liked mugs or that they’re allergic to scarves. We all have that one difficult relative who never shows any interest in anything and who you’ve never been entirely sure about how you are related. Some people just love living their life sucking the joy out of everything. “Fun? Sorry, I don’t believe in the concept!” The whole process can be grueling and torturous when all you really want is to buy them some manners. Here’s a gift guide to 5 simple items, that might make your life just a little bit easier!

A Gift-card to Waitrose or M&S

Everybody needs to eat. Even the grumpiest human cannot deny that food is a useful and essential gift. By getting someone a gift card you avoid the pressure of getting them the wrong type of food or the wrong brand. Maybe even more important, you can choose exactly how much you want to spend.

Some may say that gift cards are a bit boring, but what this lacks in fun it makes up for in connivance. If you chose to get them a Waitrose gift card they can also use it at John Lewis, so there’s really no limit to what they can find.

Wireless Speakers/ Radio

Wireless speakers, the gift people often forget to ask for, but actually, really need. Almost everybody listens to some type of music and even if they already have a speaker, they might need an extra one for their bathroom or their cabin in the woods.

Ensure that you gift one that also has a radio, that way even the oldest relatives will be happy. We mustn’t forget that the radio is man’s best friend when it comes to reminiscing about the old days and complain about how everything was better before.

Monthly Subscription to Flowers or Socks

People like the gift of connivance and what’s more convenient than getting stuff delivered straight to your door? Choose a company like ‘Bloom and Wild’ and gift your relative everything from a one-month long subscription to a whole year of beautiful flowers delivered straight to their door. If they happen to allergic to flowers you could get them a subscription to ‘Socks In a Box’ and they’ll get socks in fun patterns straight home. We all need socks, there’s no denying.

Perfect for the uncle who keeps complaining about the icy roads or the grandmother who’s somehow managed to break her hip 5 times in the last year. With a subscription they can remain sitting on their butts, doing nothing at all.

A large box of Chocolate or Alcohol

Simple is often better when it comes to grumpy people and large boxes of chocolate or bottles of alcohol are easy gifts that you can get a hold off anywhere. Get the plainest kind possible, don’t risk anything! God forbid you get them chocolate they’ve never heard of before, what a disgrace that would be!

There’s also a fair chance that they’ll take one look at the chocolates, decide it’s too much hassle and insists you keep it. Regardless of them ‘’accidentally’’ forgetting the gift at your house, there’ll be free snacks, everybody wins.

Unicef ‘Inspired Gifts’

If the person you’re buying for is insistent that they have everything they need and that they don’t have room for anything new, then why not get them something that will take up no space at all? Unicef offers something they call ‘Inspired gifts’ where you can give money towards anything from emergency supplies to school books for children in need. You can even help deliver a baby.

When paying for the gift Unicef will supply you with a gift card you can personalize to any family member or friend. It’s a lovely and thoughtful gift that never will end up in the cupboard collecting dust. Even if the person doesn’t like the gift they’ll be forced to pretend they do in order to not look like a complete ass-hat.
