10 Young Adult Books Everyone Should Read

As everyone knows, books are amazing. They can take you to different worlds, are calming, and sometimes can even make you question society and yourself. These are just of a few books that have affected me. For the book nerd in all of us, I highly suggest reading these young adult books.

1. Try Not to Breathe by Jennifer R. Hubbard

If you’re anything like me and fight depression on a daily basis, this book puts the jumbled up mess of feelings into words. After a failed suicide attempt and a stay at Patterson’s. Ryan struggles to rejoin the public. With the help of his neighbor and the two friends he made at Patterson’s, will he finally admit to his darkest secrets? Being a suicide survivor myself, this book helped me realize that I wasn’t alone.

2. Stolen by Lucy Christopher

Have you ever had that nightmare of getting kidnapped? Well, that nightmare came true for Gemma. Ty, her kidnapper, takes her from Bangkok all the way to the deserts of Australia. Will she get out alive? Will she ever see her family again? If you’re looking for a great thriller, this is it.

3. Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

If you’re a huge fan of mythology like me, this book (along with another on this list) should definitely be on your reading list.  When word comes to Galen, a Syrena prince, of a girl on land that can speak with fish, he has to meet her. After a deadly encounter with a shark, Galen knows that this fish- communicator, Emma, may be the one to help him with his problem. When I read this, I vividly remember not being to put it down. At a recent trip to a bookstore, my friend even got the book. She loves it.

4. Legend (Series) by Marie Lu

This dystopian novel is definitely on my favorites list.  In what was once the United States, the Republic has taken shape. June is a prodigy that is being trained to be of high military ranking.  When her brother is murdered, the most wanted criminal, Day, becomes the prime suspect. Will the truth be uncovered?

5. Night of the Purple Moon (Trilogy) by Sun Ra

When comic dust turns the moon purple, no one is really affected until all the adults start dying. Soon enough, all that is left of the human population are kids who have not yet hit puberty. Will 13-year-old Abby survive while also protecting her siblings this nightmare?

6. The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

Okay, yes, I read this one in high school. However, it ended up being one that I think of often. Told from different perspectives of the wife and daughters of a strict Baptist by the name of Nathan Price, this tells the story of Nathan taking his family to the Belgian Congo in 1959. Their only belongings were things they believed they would need that ended up not always “working” with the African climate. From tragedy to heartbreak to the undoing of the family, all your emotions will be invested in this suspenseful tale.

7. The Goddess Test (series) by Aimee Carter

After moving back to her childhood home as her mother’s last wish, Kate meets Henry who claims to be Hades. If she accepts his bargain to try to pass seven tests, her mother will stay alive. After seeing him bring a girl to life, she couldn’t possibly turn down the offer. If she passes all seven tests, not only will she be his bride, but also a goddess herself. I think you can figure out what would happen if she fails.

This series has a very special place in my heart, and I always make sure I point it out to friends who come over. I must say, this is more than likely my second-favorite book ever.

8. H2O (Series) by Virginia Bergin

Killer rain. Only 27% of the population remains. For some odd reason, Ruby is a survivor. With drinkable water running low, she is left with two options: try to survive on her own. Or try to find her father on the other side of the country- if he survived.

9. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Granted you’ve probably already read this or watched the movie. Oh well. It’s still one of my top favorites that made this list. Even though Hazel ultimately has terminal cancer, she keeps living. During support group, Augustus Waters shows up and dramatically changes her life. If you’re one of the few who hasn’t read this book, do it. You will laugh and cry and love with them.

10. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Maddy is allergic to everything on the outside world. She never leaves her house. All she has is her mom, her nurse, and her books. One day, a boy moves in next door. His name is Olly. Through the windows and the internet, they form a bond that can’t be unbroken. Even though you’ve probably already watched the movie, the book is well worth the read. You will experience a rollercoaster of emotions, all while longing for them to be together.

Even though I might have dozens of more young adult books that I could tell you about, these are just of few that you may havent heard of or may already love. Either way, I hope you can find something new to reawaken your inner bookworm. Happy reading!
