What His Favorite Movie Says About Him

Have you ever had the age-old movie night fight of “What do we watch: his movie choice or mine”? Afterward, have you wondered what you could find out about him based on his favorite movie (because we all know our favorite films say more about us than we ever could)? Well, wonder no longer! Here’s our carefully curated list of all the top guy flick genres, along with personal notes so you can know exactly what his favorite movie says about him!

1. Quentin Tarantino Films–Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Inglorious Basterds

If his favorite movie is a Tarantino flick, then he’s probably a skater boy who loves Dr. Pepper and playing Red Dead Redemption. He no longer dresses like your stereotypical Avril Lavigne era skater boy, having traded in his old converse for nice men’s boots and cuffed jeans, but he’d still shred at a skate park if you gave him the chance. He’s also a big fan of Rick & Morty and Game of Thrones (not the last season though – he’ll insist that the last season is garbage and shouldn’t be considered canon).

He probably watches every Tarantino movie once a year – especially Pulp Fiction – and quotes them on the regular. Most likely, he’s convinced you to watch at least three different Tarantino movies – again, definitely Pulp Fiction – and while you didn’t hate them, you wouldn’t watch them more than maybe twice in your lifetime. He never talks about his past, and he loves to cook you omelets. He’s got at least one vintage t-shirt that you think makes him look super hot, and he loves it when you pet his hair.

2. Franchise Action Films–The Fast & the Furious, Rocky, Mission Impossible

If his favorite movie is from an action film franchise, then he’s probably a gym rat who works out religiously. His favorite car is a McLaren F1 or an Aston Martin, and he refers to it as his “dream car.” He’s also up in every new electronic gadget that comes out, so you know he’s always got the newest iPhone and will easily drop $800 on a drone.

He’s definitely watched the scene from Mission Impossible 2 where Tom Cruise is free climbing up the side of a giant cliff and thought “I could do that.” His favorite superhero is Iron Man or Superman, and he owns more sleeveless tanks than you do. But he’s also a giant softie that loves to cuddle – especially if he can be the little spoon – and knows exactly what kind of cookies are your favorite.

3. Indie Films–The Peanut Butter Falcon, Moonlight, Dope

If his favorite movie is an indie film or cult classic, he has a soft scholar aesthetic and knows where to get the best coffee in town. He reads Dostoyevsky or Faulkner or Hemingway while waiting for you to meet him for lunch, and he innately understands the Dewey Decimal system because he spent a lot of time in libraries growing up.

He’s a big fan of artists like Courtney Barnett and Michael Kiwanuka, and you know for a FACT that you’ve heard him say that he used to like Hozier “before it was cool” (those words exactly). He likes nice socks and tells you that socks with an interesting design feel like an inside joke with himself because no one else can see them. He loves to take you on dates to museums and book shops, and you’re not afraid to introduce him to your mom.

4. Anime Films–Akira, Your Name, Princess Mononoke

For the guy who says his favorite movie is an anime film, he personally looks up to Elon Musk. He’s incredibly well-informed on current events, and he always helps you to understand what’s happening in the news. Sometimes he can be a little awkward, but he’s super sweet and he’s an amazing cook. If he has siblings, he’s probably the oldest and works really hard to be a good role model for them and take care of them.

If you ask him to explain the plot of his favorite movie, he will absolutely talk your ear off and you’ll learn everything about anime movies, from Miyazaki films to anime series movie spinoffs. He will always be in the middle of watching at least seven shows at a time, mainly because he spends just as much time playing the video games he’s been waiting months for. The GameStop employees all know his name, and he always knows where to find the cutest plushies (which he will buy for you if you ask).

5. Disney Films

If his favorite movie is a Disney film, then he’s a soft boy through and through. He’s always well-stocked on popcorn and chocolate milk, and he’s more likely to eat his snacks in a cup than he is to pour his goldfish into a bowl. He’s a big fan of sweatshirts and t-shirts, but he never looks lazy (just very, very cozy). He likes to switch between being the big spoon and the little spoon.

If he likes the classic Disney princess movies, he loves to sing and will sing all the time, especially when you’re driving in the car. If he likes the more rare Disney films, like The Lorax or Meet the Robinsons, then he’s really good at games and will always beat you (always). He’s got a nice smile, and he’s got a really good relationship with one of his parents.

6. Franchise Fantasy Films–Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Marvel Movies

If his favorite movie is a fantasy franchise film, then he’s a mega nerd. Like a good mega nerd, but he has definitely read and watched everything related to the series – comic books, novels, lightsaber user manuals, etc. – and can tell you every minor detail or bit of trivia related to the filming. He used to read a lot as a kid and has spread his book collection in every nook and cranny of his home.

He wants to name his children Leia or Tony or Sam or something nerd-related, and you’ve had to politely turn down that idea quite a few times. But he definitely does want kids and he already knows when he’s going to start introducing them to the movies. He loves a good midnight premiere, and his favorite popcorn is when he can put the cheese dust on it. He’s an exceptionally hard worker and knows the value of determination and drive.

7. Sports Flicks–Field Of Dreams, Concussion, Moneyball

If his favorite movie is a sports flick, he’s a guys guy. He loves hanging out with the boys, and he always has at least one full six-pack of beer in his fridge at all times. He’s a part of every sports season, and he and the boys always have a fantasy league going. That said, he’s also super open to watching your favorite moves (even if he doesn’t like them) and he isn’t going to just pick the boys over you.

He owns at least ten baseball caps, and he’ll always pick a burger or steak over any other kind of meal. He has a great relationship with his mom, and he loves all dogs and talks to them like they’re people too. He used to play baseball when he was younger, but now he just enjoys hanging out and watching sports.

8. Quotable Action Movies–Die Hard, Fight Club, Terminator

If his favorite movie is a quotable action movie, then he almost definitely suggests to his friends once a month that they start a fight club. He doesn’t really watch a lot of sports, but he does like the UFC and he tells you often that he wants to start boxing. He never works out, but somehow he’s still pretty fit. He drinks energy drinks daily, and he stays up late into the night gaming with his buds. He doesn’t cook a lot, but he makes amazing spaghetti, and he takes you out to delicious hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

He doesn’t have the best grades, but he’s exceptionally smart and always knows what’s new in the fields of science and technology. He argues the school is a part of the brainwashed capitalist agenda, but he wants to be a lawyer or a journalist, so he knows he has to graduate college. He loves playing with fire and will be the first to break into an abandoned building to explore. Please tell this man that he cannot jump off the roof and come out unscathed, everyone is starting to get concerned with his superman complex.

9. Comedies–Happy Gilmore, Step Brothers, Borat

If his favorite movie is a comedy, then he was definitely the class clown (sorry, I don’t make the rules). He’s genuinely super funny and can always make you laugh. You don’t really find his movies as funny as he does, but you like them well enough and you love to see his laughing face. His favorite color is orange or blue, and he listens to standup comedy to go to sleep (it’s actually super relaxing though, so you kind of enjoy it).

He’s super cheerful as a person, but he was incredibly nervous about meeting your parents and he insisted on buying flowers and dessert to bring with him. He can be a bit awkward, but he’s a good kisser, and his hair is always really soft. He’s easy to be with and you feel comfortable around him, although he can have a hard time being serious. But if you really need to talk, he always listens, and he knows exactly what flavor of ice cream is your favorite.

10. RomComs–Coming to America, She’s Out of My League, Hitch

If his favorite movie is a romcom, he knows exactly where the best date-night spots are in town, and he always orders your favorite food when you go out without you even having to say anything. Sometimes he can a bit cheesy or silly, but it’s pretty cute and you always love it. He reminds you of Freddie from Scooby-Doo (and you had the biggest crush on Freddie, so it’s perfect).

He hates horror films and loves camping and stargazing. His friends always go to him for advice on girls because they know he’s the most reliable, and he’s also really good at one specific sport, like soccer or basketball. He can have idealized ideas about love and relationships, so sometimes you have to keep him grounded in reality. But he’s also a super sweet guy who likes your cat and knows how to make risotto.
