What are Depaul Students Wearing in Chicago This Fall?

Depaul University, located in the heart of Chicago, is filled with creative students from all around the world. Since it is a city school, you don’t get the typical “college experience”, but you do get exposed to a lot of diversity, culture, and real-life experiences. A direct result of all of this is the fashion seen around campus. Throughout the past couple of years, 90’s and Y2K fashion has influenced trends throughout the seasons. On campus at Depaul University, inspo from these past decades is obvious. After spending the first couple weeks of school observing the outfits of fellow students, I was able to find the latest things trending this semester.

Maxi Skirts

The first trend I want to talk about is maxi skirts. Maxi skirts are everywhere and the perfect piece to add to your fall wardrobe. They are great to wear to keep warm as winter starts approaching, and the perfect piece to layer with. Depending on the season, maxi skirts can be layered with an oversized sweater, or paired with a cropped or cami top. I have been seeing them everywhere all over campus and the city of Chicago in linen, denim, lace, cotton, sheer, and more. They are on trend with Y2K influence and the comfortability of them is appealing to many students. Maxi skirts are especially helpful in the windy city of Chicago because you do not have to worry about anything flying up with a gust of wind. Some great places to find maxi skirts this fall are Brandy Melville, Urban Outfitters, and ASOS.

Canvas Bags

The next trend that everyone is wearing at Depaul University are canvas tote bags. Canvas tote bags have replaced backpacks on campus. Both men and women have hopped on the trend for the practical use of carrying around laptops and school supplies, but also for everyday use carrying groceries or just as a purse. Canvas bags also match everything, especially in the fall. The beige goes great with the colors of fall as the leaves start to change. You can find canvas tote bags anywhere from your local target or grocery store to almost any boutique around your city. So, if you are looking for a new school bag but lost on a specific style, go for a canvas tote as they are affordable and timeless.

Knee-High Boots

When I hear the word fall the first thing that pops into my head is boots. Boots are all over Depaul University’s campus right now. The past couple years short boots have been trending, but as the Doc Marten hierarchy beings to slowly decline this year with a strong Y2K influence knee high boots are back. Knee high boots are my favorite fall trend so far. They elevate any look whether you’re going to class or hitting the town. A flat boot is great for a school day and walking through the city. A heeled one is great for a night out with friends. Throughout campus I have been noticing a lot of knee-high boots paired with mini skirts and dresses to create a functional and flirty look. The most affordable place to find knee-high boots are at your local thrift store. All the boots that I own are thrifted and because of that very unique. If you are in the Chicago area, Buffalo Exchange, Goodwill, and Salvation army are great thrift stores to check out. Urban Outfitters, Revolve, and Free People are also great options to find knee-high boots. These options will cost you more, but if you’re looking for quality over quantity this is the option for you. These boots will last you multiple seasons, but thrifting boots may allow you to purchase more at one time.

Going to college in the city at Depaul University means comfort and functionality is the most important thing while getting dressed in the morning. A good pair of sneakers is essential. For Depaul University students, many commute on train, bus, on foot, or bike to get to class. A comfortable and cute sneaker is a must for school days. This fall on Depaul University campus, Adidas are in and Nike is out. The adidas trend is a direct result from Bella Hadid’s street style and other influencers. Converse are another timeless sneaker that are seen everywhere around campus. Converse will never go out of style and the price point is affordable for most students. Converse are also often able to be found at thrift stores, which is where many college students including myself frequently shop.

Pendant Necklaces

Jewelry is key this fall. On campus at Depaul University this fall students are pairing well curated jewelry pieces to every outfit. Specifically, pendant necklaces. No matter if it’s a V neck or turtleneck, I have been seeing pendants everywhere. The cool thing about this campus trend is that pendant necklaces are hard to find at your average retail store. The ones that I own all come from my mom’s closet or are from a Thrift store. My biggest tip to accomplishing this trend this fall is finding a necklace band that you love and collecting charms or pendants from vintage/ thrift stores, and or a family members closet and keep switching them in and out. This trick has helped me not only save space in my jewelry box, but also be able to look for specific things while shopping vintage and at thrift stores.

Cargo Pants

Lastly, we have to talk about cargos. On the campus of Depaul University cargo pants are everywhere. From students, both men and women, to old professors, everyone is wearing them. I believe the main reason to be their comfortability. Again, most DePaul students are sitting on a train to commute to class from all around the city. After that, students sit in class for hours on end. Loose cargo pants are a great, comfortable, and on trend option while getting dressed in the morning. Some suitable places to find cargo pants are Motel, Jaded London, and H&M. Most fast fashion brands have cargo pants in stock right now, but these three in particular have great ones which I know from personal experience. Thrifting is another fantastic way to find cargo pants, you just may have to dig a little.
