10 Unique Bars In Johannesburg South Africa

Johannesburg South Africa, a city rich of storytelling-worthy history. A city of urban renaissance. A city to visit. The City of Gold. Also, a city with unique bars you don’t want to miss out on.

Hell’s Kitchen

Tucked away on 7th – it surely is not a kitchen from hell. Its exposed brick walls & secret room behind a library-worthy bookcase gives you that high street 1920’s New York glamour feel. Sip on the wide selection of gin, impressive whiskey range, wines and cocktails, and enjoy their saloon-style-inspired dishes. Be sure to try one of my fave go-to dishes, the butternut, caramelised onions, feta & almond pizza (it’s so worth the calories)

7th Street, Mellville, Johannesburg South Africa

Brian Lara Rum Eatery

One thing’s for certain, you’re in for a sweet escape. A tropical paradise where pink neon lights flicker above retro velvet furniture & palm-tree wall prints. No doubt there are a few flamingoes hiding among the shrubs. Order quirky cocktails from the hanging banana bar – Pina Colada served in fresh pineapples is my favourite.

56 4th Ave, Linden, Randburg

Katy’s Palace Bar

Enjoy sweeping views of the city while swaying to live music made by local talent. This warehouse-inspired bar has taken long tables to a whole other level, where sharing it with strangers is part of one’s lot, and thus making it easier than ever to make new friends. This is a palace one must visit where all food is served buffet style.

Top Floor, 6 Desmond Street, Kramerville, Sandton

Perron

Taco ‘bout a party with your amigos. In one of Joburg’s biggest art suburbs, you’ll find a Mexican Restaurant worth every penny. Their wide variety of Tequilas will make you want to order another round. Their menu varies from the best jalapeno poppers to crispy fish tacos.

65 4th Ave, Mellville, Johannesburg South Africa

The Good Luck Bar

It has industrial written all over it – the rustic rawness of the décor reminds me of a modern dive bar you’ll find in the not-so-dodgy street alleys of San Francisco. Don’t know where to grab a thirst quencher while there’s a thunderstorm outside – don’t sweat it, the soothing sounds of dripping rain on the tin roof of The Good Luck Bar will be music to your ears alongside the live music.

1 Fox Street, Ferreirastown, Inner City, Johannesburg

The Living Room

Joburg’s most Instagrammable location has been filling many feeds & it’s no surprise why – draped with greenery filling every spot for the ultimate rooftop ambience. This lush garden bar overlooks the whole of Johannesburg, making it your sundowner must go-to. Klink that drink while the DJ spins his records all night long. I’ve never gotten to the eating part, but Word-of-Mouth has confirmed that the nachos are any foodie’s dream.

5th Floor, Main Change Building, 20 Kruger Street, Maboneng

The Landmark

A buzzy upmarket vibe attracting the diversity Joburg has to offer to one spot. The chic ambience lends itself to an unforgettable night with the girls or whiskey sipping with the guys. The bar has many levels, with an immense variety and bartenders who’ll listen to all your Monday blue sorrow-spills.

Elevate Rooftop Bar

A wall of glass doors offering a 360 degree of the sun setting behind the peaks of the city’s tallest buildings. The stylish design & décor makes this venue upmarket while illuminating its uniqueness. The perfect bar to dance your week’s worries away. 16th Floor, Reef Hotel,

Tassel suede and velvet draped chandeliers filling the skies, setting the mood for that block-party you’ve only dreamed about or seen in the movies. It’s vibe is a mix of New York apartment + a vast plant swathe of vertical gardens Greenery, coin floors and whimsical décor sums The Great Dane up.
