10 Underrated, Binge-Worthy Shows On Netflix

Netflix has turned into the primary source of binge-watching your favorite movies and TV shows. But being in-between Netflix shows can be boring and leaves you searching for a good show to watch. Sometimes it’s the underrated shows on Netflix that make for the best binges. Here’s a list of 10 underrated Netflix shows to watch next time you’re in-between series.

1. The Carrie Diaries

The Carrie Diaries is the high school years prequel to Sex and the City. The show is set in the 1980’s, following a young and fashionable Carrie Bradshaw (portrayed by AnnaSophia Robb) as she finds herself, love and happiness after her mother passed away. The Carrie Diaries is a feel-good, coming of age series that makes you fall for Sebastian (played by the very handsome Austin Butler) and aspire to be Carrie. Definitely, a Netflix must watch!

2. How to Get Away with Murder

How to Get Away with Murder is a suspenseful TV drama about a group of five law school students who are chosen to work alongside the renowned lawyer, Annalise Keating (played by the Oscar and Tony award-winning Viola Davis). The plot gets suspenseful and complicated, as you learn through flash-forwards, that the students are doing much more than just studying for their exams . The series is intense and captivating and currently has 4 seasons on Netflix for you to binge-watch.

3. Young and Hungry

Young and Hungry is a hilarious and original sitcom about Gabi (Emily Osment), a young chef who successfully cooks her way into a job as a private chef for a local billionaire, Josh. Gabi and Josh quickly hit it off and the show, although slightly cheesy, is very entertaining. You immediately get invested in Gabi’s dramatic life and crazy antics. The episodes are only 20 minutes long, making it the perfect show to watch several episodes of before bed!

4. Ozark

Ozark is a Netflix original series starring and produced by Jason Bateman. Bateman’s character, Marty Byrde, is a financial planner turned money-launderer who moves with his wife and two kids to a small summer vacation spot in the Ozarks, where he finds himself in some “work troubles”. Ozark is a dramatic show with twists and turns every episode. Although it was unlike the shows I normally go to watch, Ozark quickly roped me in with its intriguing story-line and incredible acting. Netflix recently released the second season and I would highly recommend starting the series!

5. Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is a comical sitcom that was recently added to Netflix but definitely worth a watch! The show follows a formerly wealthy family through their journey of losing all of their money and properties- except a small town that the father bought several years back as a joke, Schitt’s Creek. It’s filled with quick wit and dry, sarcastic humor making it a unique and fun comedy! The show plays on the stereotype of the typical rich American family, sucking the audience in and making the show one that you can’t turn off.

6. Dynasty

Dynasty is a modernized remake of the 1980’s soap opera version of the show with the same name. The show follows the Carringtons, a wealthy American family that has a monopoly on the electricity business and works very hard to maintain their high reputation and glamorous appearance. Fallon Carrington (played by Liz Gillies) steals the screen with her snobby attitude and bad-ass decisions. The writers make it difficult to not root for Fallon, despite her brattiness. The show only has one season currently on Netflix but another season is airing on the CW and will be on Netflix soon!

7. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a quirky Netflix original about Kimmy Schmidt (portrayed by Ellie Kemper), a young woman who is rescued from a cult in which she was kept in an underground bunker for 15 years. Kimmy, having grown up in captivity, is a slightly odd and socially-awkward woman who misunderstands many situations. The series does a phenomenal job of using a heavy topic but keeping the show light and hilarious. Kimmy’s enthusiasm of life and love for positivity makes the audience love her and enjoy watching her journey back into the real world, with the help of friends that she makes along the way. This show is totally different from any show you’ve ever binged on Netflix, in the best way possible.

8. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is another Netflix original series that is perfect for all of the Riverdale fans out there! The series is a sister-show to Riverdale, as it occurs in the neighboring town Greendale. Like Riverdale, it is also a spin-off of popular comics and is a more thriller version of Sabrina the teenage witch. The show’s protagonist, Sabrina, is a half-witch, half-mortal who must deal with two very terrifying things at once: fighting evil and growing up. The show premiered right around Halloween time, so it was perfect for a light night scare, but it’s so good it’s perfect any time of the year.

9. I Am a Killer

I Am a Killer is a Netflix original documentary series that interviews and tells the story of murderers who ended up on death row for their crimes. The series is chilling and the perfect amount of creepy to draw you in and keep you interested. I Am a Killer shows all angles of the crime story and brings you on an emotional journey as it unveils the events leading up to and following the murders. The show interviews the criminal, the family members and even eye-witnesses giving the audience every perspective possible. Even if you are not into crime shows, I would highly recommend giving this Netflix series a try – but I would also recommend watching it with the lights on!

10. Black Mirror

Black Mirror is a series that is easily comparable to a modern-world version of the Twilight Zone. Each episode is a stand-alone story-line with a unique set of characters about technology and how it can quickly spin out of control. The sci-fi Netflix series is mind-blowing and the perfect amount of puzzling to make you think about the world and mankind in a different light. By the end of every episode, the audience sits stunned, searching for more details and sometimes even rewatching it to truly understand the sharp and alarming endings. Black Mirror is a show that grabs your attention immediately!
