Ultimate Freshman Guide To SDSU Halloween

It’s finally that time of the year! The leaves are changing, the weather gets cooler, and the parties get crazier. At San Diego State University, better known as Rage State, you can bet Halloween is a pivotal part of the semester. Not only is Halloween celebrated on the 31st, it is celebrated the entire week leading up to the big Hallow’s Eve, giving it the name “Halloweek.” Consider this your VIP Survival Guide to SDSU Halloween, you can thank me later.

1. Prepare for a week’s worth of costumes.

It’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it. The first thing you need to do when approaching Halloweek, is to plan out your costumes. I use the plural for costume, as you will have an entire week of costumes to plan for. While the thought of merely choosing ONE good costume for Halloween may send you into a frenzy tearing up your entire closet, it is vital that you remain calm and follow these three steps.

SDSU Halloween Costume Tips:

1. Do not buy an expensive costume.

There is no need to go out and buy the deluxe schoolgirl costume from the Halloween Store for $50. Throw a white button up and a plaid skirt together and BAM! Schoolgirl outfit without the charge. Dress it up with some pigtails and high socks and you’re good to go.

2. Use makeup to your advantage.

Two, it doesn’t have to be about the clothes you wear, use makeup to your advantage. Fishnet stockings and glitter eyeshadow create the perfect mermaid scales effect, so throw on your black crop top and jean shorts and you’re set!

3. Own it and you’ll be fine.

And three, own your outfit. Nothing’s better than a $5 Walmart t shirt, so cut it in to a cute crop top and own it.

2. Schoolwork will be assigned as usual, so don’t procrastinate!

As much as we all want to think the world comes to a halt so we can rage for a week straight, unfortunately it does not. Schoolwork will still be assigned as usual, so use the week before to get ahead on your work.

The last thing you want is to be the one at home writing the term paper you’ve been assigned for a month while your friends are out having a great time. And while we’re talking about school, it’s not worth it to be hung over for your big midterm because you HAD to go out the night before.

Pro Tip: You have an entire week to party, so take the night off when you have a big test the following morning. Trust me you’ll be glad you did and have a much better Halloween weekend at SDSU.

3. Pace yourself, and stay hydrated.

It’s not every week that there’s a party every single night…who am I kidding, yes it is. But it may not always be as socially acceptable to go out every night of the week, until Halloweek. With that in mind, be sure to pace yourself. It’s easy to go all out the first night, but you’ll be regretting it when you’re too tired and hungover to make it through the rest of the week. If you’re on 10 the entire week, don’t be surprised when you don’t make it to Halloween night (not like I would know or anything).

4. Be safe, stay with friends!

Above everything else, make sure to be safe during SDSU Halloween! With everyone in masks and costumes you don’t want to think you’re going home from the frat with Johnny, and realize after he takes his mask off that is so NOT Johnny.

We’ve all run in to the crazy homeless people who hang around the Arco gas station and Halloween is an even greater opportunity for them to scout out the cute little girls who got lost from the pack.

Stick with a group of friends, and always walk home with someone. Worse case, uber is always there for you, and you can tell your crazy stories from the night to your driver who I’m sure hasn’t heard them all before.

5. Remember that Halloweek is the most wonderful time of the year!

And if anyone tries to tell you something different, they clearly haven’t been to SDSU Halloween. Keep these tips and tricks in mind, and you are sure to have the most lit Halloween weekend of all time.
