With the recent news about the environmental impact of fast fashion brands, many people are searching for a new trend to dress well while not harming the planet. However, one of the best places to shop that goes unnoticed by most is your own wardrobe.<\/p>\n

You may feel like you have nothing to wear, but chances are you’ll actually luck out if you follow these steps and adhere to this new trend. These are our tips for maximising what you already own and avoid spending more money on clothes.<\/p>\n

1. Organise your clothes<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the best ways to adhere to the trend of shopping in your wardrobe is simply organising your clothes. If you throw everything in your closet without regard for its proper place, it’ll make choosing an outfit that much more difficult because you won’t even know where to start looking for what you need.<\/p>\n

Start by organising your items by what they are: separate shorts from trousers, skirts from dresses, and graphic tees from dressier blouses, and you’ll immediately discover a newfound ease when picking an outfit in the morning.<\/p>\n

2. Separate basics from trendy pieces<\/span><\/h2>\n

Along with organising your clothes based on type, another way to adhere to the trend of wearing what you own is by separating items based on when you would wear them. For example, among your dresses, separate basic dresses from occasion dresses, so you’ll know exactly where to look depending on what you need an outfit for.<\/p>\n

3. Hide your favourite pieces<\/span><\/h2>\n

Part of the difficulty with adhering to this trend is feeling like you keep wearing the same pieces over and over, not venturing out to the rest of your wardrobe. However, an easy way to overcome this is by putting a few of the pieces you wear constantly in the back of your wardrobe where they can’t be seen, so your eyes jump to less familiar pieces when you first go to your wardrobe.<\/p>\n

Though it’s difficult to get out of your comfort zone, this is a simple way to force yourself to get uncomfortable with your style and wear unfamiliar items.<\/p>\n

4. Color-coordinate<\/span><\/h2>\n

While organising your closet, take some time to separate your clothes by colour as well so that each section will be a full-fledged, aesthetically pleasing rainbow. Not only does it make your wardrobe more inviting, but it will also help you stay on track with the trend of shopping in your closet since you’ll be able to more easily navigate what you own and jump to the pink shirt section if that’s what you’re feeling!<\/p>\n

5. De-wrinkle<\/span><\/h2>\n

Though you may have an abundance of great items in your wardrobe, you may be turned off from wearing them because they’re wrinkled, and because you’ve never gotten around to steaming or ironing them, they’ve been sitting in your wardrobe unworn for months.<\/p>\n

By simply taking some time out of your day to de-wrinkle the necessary items in your wardrobe, you’ll be more inclined to stick with this trend and wear what you own without excuses!<\/p>\n

6. Have a friend browse your wardrobe<\/span><\/h2>\n

Though you may feel like you have nothing to wear, it can be helpful to have another set of eyes browse your wardrobe and open your mind to outfits and pieces you never noticed you had. Part of the difficulty with this trend is that you’ve accustomed yourself to viewing your clothes one way and it’s hard to snap out of that mindset.<\/p>\n

However, it’s easy to invite a friend over to have a quick glance over your wardrobe, and this simple act will inspire you to shop your closet more.<\/p>\n

7. Search Pinterest for inspiration<\/span><\/h2>\n

When you’re feeling like it’s impossible to style the pieces you have, sites like Pinterest are a great resource to get new inspiration for wearing what you already own while still staying on trend. If you’re struggling with how to style a jean jacket or basic black t-shirt, search for that item on Pinterest and you’ll be surprised with the new outfits you’ll discover that will have you wanting to wear your own clothes for once.<\/p>\n

8. Document what you wear<\/span><\/h2>\n

It can be difficult to get out of your comfort zone, but documenting what you wear every day can help you see how often you wear the same pieces and types of outfits, motivating you to try something new. Plus, it can also be a great way to look back at what you’ve worn and get inspired to wear a unique outfit again. Try to take a picture of your outfit every day for a week and see what it does to your style!<\/p>\n
