Formulated with acne-busting salicylic acid, sulphur, and calamine, this drying lotion works overnight to calm and dry any troublesome spots super fast. Apply with a cotton bud on your spots at night (make sure not to shake the bottle; you\u2019ll need to get all that good, undiluted pink sediment on the tip of your cotton bud) and watch your skin heal up by morning!<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Hydrocolloid Dressings<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hydrocolloid dressings, sometimes known as pimple patches<\/a>, are an absolute must-have in your acne-busting arsenal. Beauty scientist Michelle of LabMuffin explains how these miracle products work:<\/span><\/p>\n

“Hydrocolloid bandages are flexible bandages made of a water-attracting material attached to a thin plastic film. The bandage is stuck to an open wound with the water-attracting film facing downwards. Hydrocolloids were originally designed to be used for ulcers, but they\u2019ve become more popular for acne, particularly in Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tough, outer plastic film is usually polyurethane and keeps everything in place, as well as preventing the water from evaporating and drying out the wound, so the wound heals faster and the new skin that forms is supple rather than tight and stiff. It also protects the wound against rubbing and scratching.<\/span><\/p>\n

The water-attracting material is usually made of carboxymethyl cellulose, gelatin and\/or pectin, which have lots of water-binding groups in their chemical structure. This sucks fluid out of the wound. As fluid enters the bandage, it goes from transparent to white and swells up, which means you get a very satisfying white spot.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Basically, hydrocolloid dressings create a barrier over a wound (such as a big, messy pimple) that keeps the area moist and promotes healing, while simultaneously sucking all the nasty gunk out of your spot. Make sure to apply on pimples that have come to a head (think those big, icky whiteheads that you can\u2019t help but give a little squeeze), and watch your acne heal in real time as the patch fills with fluid and turns from clear to white.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Acne.org Treatment – Benzoyl Peroxide 2.5%<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you\u2019ve tried any over the counter acne treatments or cleansers, you\u2019ve likely tried benzoyl peroxide. Used to treat mild to moderate acne, this bacteria busting ingredient is the basis of many acne products, as it\u2019s currently the most effective OTC acne treatment available. Acne.org<\/span><\/a> has formulated a 2.5% gel based formula, which is potentially more effective than higher, more drying concentrations of benzoyl peroxide found on pharmacy shelves:<\/span><\/p>\n

“Several studies show that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide helps get rid of blemishes and helps prevent pimples just as well as 10% solutions. Because of the lower concentration of benzoyl peroxide, 2.5% gets rid of acne with much less irritation, thus allowing for a sustainable regimen which keeps the skin healthy and clear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not be fooled by “maximum strength” claims on 10% benzoyl peroxide medications. Companies know that people will always buy the “maximum strength” they can buy. But educated consumers know that 2.5% benzoyl peroxide is equally effective and much less irritating. This allows you to use as much as you need to get completely clear and stay that way.”<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Tea Tree Oil<\/span><\/h2>\n

An oldie but a goodie, tea tree oil has been used for it\u2019s antiseptic properties for ages! Bundajalung Aboriginal people from New South Wales were the first to crush leaves from the Melaleuca Alternifolia plant and apply the paste onto wounds, and scientific studies in the 1920\u2019s proved that tea tree oil\u2019s antiseptic properties were much stronger than commonly used antiseptics of the time. This antiseptic, anti-fungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory agent is often used in acne treatments – in fact, the Body Shop has an entire line based around tea tree oil<\/a> – but can also be applied directly onto acne as a natural spot treatment. Make sure to do a patch test first, and to always dilute with a carrier oil (healthline.com<\/span><\/a> recommends 12 drops of a carrier oil to 1-2 drops of tea tree oil).<\/span><\/p>\n
