Keeping up a relationship with a fake friend can lead to a toxic environment and completely drain you. It\u2019s always important to pay attention to certain friends\u2019 habits if you\u2019re concerned. Here are 8 signs showing a possible fake friend.<\/p>\n

1. They only talk about themselves.<\/h2>\n

Fake friends only care about themselves. They put their needs before anyone else\u2019s and you\u2019ll find that they won\u2019t be there to answer your call when you need them. They\u2019ll boast about their achievements and weigh you down with their problems. But when it comes to helping you back, they just can\u2019t be bothered. Every conversation turns back to them.<\/p>\n

2. They only go out when it suits them.<\/h2>\n

When they want to go somewhere but not be alone, that\u2019s when you\u2019ll get the phone call. You can bet they\u2019ve already asked others but you\u2019re the last option. If you ask them out, chances are the answer is \u2018no\u2019 unless it\u2019s what they<\/em> want to do.<\/p>\n

3. They always make promises they never keep.<\/h2>\n

Fake people always want to look good in front of others. They act like they don\u2019t care but they\u2019re actually very self-conscious and want others to think highly of them. To help their own image, they\u2019ll make promises but never see them through. Whether it\u2019s big or small, they\u2019ll disappear when it comes to doing whatever it is they promised.<\/p>\n

4. They make you feel guilty for not seeing them.<\/h2>\n

Even though they don\u2019t care about seeing you unless it suits them, they\u2019ll always make you feel terrible when you bail on them. They\u2019ll use it against you anytime you want to change plans or say \u2018no\u2019. One of their biggest weapons is the guilt-trip. It\u2019s an easy way to manipulate you into doing what they want. Everyone has a life outside of their friends\u2019. People work, go to university, have more than one friendship group, you can\u2019t please everyone. A true friend understands this and will be patient.<\/p>\n

5. They expect you to drop everything for them but never return the favour.<\/h2>\n

When you need them, are they nowhere to be seen? To be blunt, they\u2019re a fake friend, they just don\u2019t care. They\u2019ll be hostile if you don\u2019t drop everything for them, but when it comes to returning the favour, their life is more important. You can\u2019t rely or depend upon fake friends, they don\u2019t provide any support at all.<\/p>\n

6. They can be passive-aggressive.<\/h2>\n

Passive-aggressiveness can be used alongside the guilt-trip method. They\u2019ll provide back-handed compliments, use subtle insults whilst pretending it\u2019s all \u201cjust a joke\u201d. This creates a toxic environment and, in simple terms, make you feel like utter shit. You don\u2019t have to put up with it.<\/p>\n

7. They behave differently around certain people.<\/h2>\n

They pretend they want to please everyone and become chameleons around different people. They\u2019ll create personas to seem appealing and reliable. Don\u2019t trust this. If you notice someone changing their personality around others, just ask yourself, \u201cWell, do I really know who they are?\u201d<\/p>\n

8. They have a nasty habit of gossiping.<\/h2>\n

Gossiping should be left at school. It\u2019s immature and there\u2019s just no need. Be honest with yourself, if you\u2019ve heard them gossiping about people, then they\u2019re probably gossiping about you too. Real friends are honest and air out their issues, they don\u2019t go behind people\u2019s backs.<\/p>\n

9. They always expect compliments but can\u2019t take criticism.<\/h2>\n

They usually seem like they love themselves and want you to compliment them on anything and everything. But any criticism and you\u2019ll see their mood instantly change. Constructive criticism is helpful and honest, good friends will know how to tell you something without making you feel bad about yourself. Fake friends can\u2019t take it and will lash out immediately.<\/p>\n

10. They make you feel terrible.<\/h2>\n

The biggest thing you should ask yourself if you suspect someone of being fake is: how do they make you feel? If you leave their company feeling drained, beaten down or just plain terrible, then that should be a big enough sign. Real friends are there to help and support you, not make you feel worse or belittle you.<\/p>\n

Keep the people in your life who are proud of you and aren\u2019t afraid to say it. Keep close the friends who support and love you, the ones who you can have a laugh with without having to walk on eggshells constantly. Fake friends can lower your confidence and waste your time. Keep the real friends who build you back up.<\/h3>\n
