DULOG<\/span>, Durham University’s musical theatre group<\/span>,<\/span> was established over 50 years ago<\/span>. I<\/span>t puts on five shows a year and prides itself on the professionalism <\/span>and <\/span>charisma<\/span> <\/span>of each performance. It is a huge society that offers roles not just in singing, dancing and a<\/span>cting but in stage production, directing, choreographing, musical direction, technical directing and more<\/span>– <\/span>the list goes on<\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Musical<\/span> <\/span>t<\/span>heatre is a <\/span>huge<\/span> part of my life and<\/span>, <\/span>having been involved in performing arts from a young age, there is nothing that bri<\/span>ngs me more joy. Having just finished a run of \u2018Seussical the <\/span>M<\/span>usical\u2019 at the Gala Theatre – DULOG\u2019s biggest show of the year I have decided to <\/span>write this article. Though it\u2019s all smiles for the audience, sometimes there is more drama off stage than on, but that\u2019s show biz <\/span>right<\/span>\u2026<\/span>Here\u2019s my personal relay of what life in the limelight is really like. <\/span><\/p>\n

Auditions are terrifying. <\/span><\/h2>\n

It doesn\u2019t matter how many auditions you go to, they will for most people (cough, me, coug<\/span>h) always be terrifying. You might think that auditioning at uni where everyone knows each other makes it easier, on the contrary. Seeing friendly faces is great until you realize their a phenomenal singer and you have to audition after them. You hear everything through the Elvet Riverside doors; it makes you question why you showed up in the first place. God forbid you have the same audition song.\u00a0You thought the Hunger Games was intense; it’s the exact same. Maybe I’m being dramatic but I am a theatre lover. Everyone wholeheartedly supports one another. While auditioning is nerve-wracking, it’s worthwhile.<\/p>\n

\n<\/h6>\n

Waiting to hear back from your audition fee<\/span>ls like waiting for a YEAR.<\/span><\/h2>\n

After your audition, if you’ve done well, you get a call back. Then you wait an eternity for one of two things: an email or phone call. No one wants to send or recieve that email. When it comes to Durham University’s musical theatre group, it goes like this: “we were really impressed with your audition but unfortunately this time we are unable to offer you a role.” Ouch. Getting that email is not the best, but it’s not the end of the world either. I always ask for feedback. Keep going to auditions because if you love theatre, that shouldn’t stop you. If you do get the phone call then rehearsals begin; that’s a whole different ball game.<\/p>\n

\u201cPre<\/span> Season\u201d Musical Theatre<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>G<\/span>ala show is every DULOG-ers most highly anticipated show of the year<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span>t\u2019s a <\/span>great <\/span>chance to perform <\/span>to a large crowd, <\/span>in a professional theatre<\/span>. That<\/span>, <\/span>coupled with the fact that it\u2019s during the first week of term<\/span>, equals <\/span>stress. In ord<\/span>er to get the show completed and rehearsed enough<\/span>, <\/span>we like to pretend <\/span>that <\/span>we are part of Team Durham and start term a week and a half early for \u2018pre- season\u2019 MT and that<\/span>, ladies and gentlemen, <\/span>that<\/span> is <\/span>where the fun <\/span>begins<\/span><\/span>. Day 1 and everyone arrives at 9am<\/span>, <\/span>on the dot, <\/span>with <\/span>gym gear and stash on<\/span> and <\/span>ready for the <\/span>warm<\/span>–<\/span>up<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0However\u00a0as we are not<\/span> a<\/span> part of Team Durham<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>n<\/span>or <\/span>we <\/span>are <\/span>elite athletes<\/span>, the<\/span> <\/span>w<\/span>arm up largely consists of a lot of moaning. It has begun! <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

And All That Jazz <\/span><\/h2>\n

Having settled in to a very quiet Durham, rehearsals are well underway and\u00a0<\/span>all things\u00a0<\/span>singing, dancing and <\/span>acting <\/span>ensue. Slowly but surely\u00a0<\/span>a show begins to form. T<\/span>here<\/span> is a lot of waiting around, <\/span>many<\/span> repeated harmonies, and a <\/span>lot<\/span> of frustration over formations and step ball change<\/span>s, but\u00a0<\/span>we are <\/span>getting there<\/span>, <\/span>and we still have a week <\/span>left<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Blood Sweat and Tears – The Midweek Dip <\/span><\/h2>\n

Now envision this: <\/span>you<\/span>\u2019ve been rehearsing now for a week, 11 hours a day<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>in a room that is only 5 degrees (who said Showbiz wasn\u2019t glamorous?)<\/span>. Obviously,<\/span> there is bound to be a little bit of tension. Contrary to popular belief DULOG is not <\/span>that <\/span><\/em>bitchy, but we are only human and we do<\/span> all get on each other’s nerves. Rehearsing for any musical but particularly one like ‘Seussical’ which<\/span>\u00a0has lots of\u00a0<\/span>individual parts and small groups results in lots of waiting around<\/span>. <\/span>Boredom and frustration usually strike <\/span>while the directors and choreographers work with others<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span>, <\/span>when you\u2019re tired, cold and just wa<\/span>nt a bit more stage time<\/span>,<\/span> there comes a point where <\/span>the general consensus in the room is\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI<\/span> AM SO DONE<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Morale Boosting<\/span><\/h2>\n

But, there is surely a light at the end of the tunnel? And if not a light then an evident sense of camaraderie. T<\/span>he phrase \u2018morale boosting\u2019 was used a lot during the\u00a0<\/span>rehearsal period of ‘Seussical<\/span>‘<\/span> and<\/span>, <\/span>in an attempt to keep us positive and lively we played al<\/span>l kinds of stupid games<\/span>. These included embarrassing theatre faves such as<\/span> \u2018giddy-up\u2019 <\/span>and \u2018big disco<\/span>,<\/span> little disco\u2019<\/span>– I mean, what\u2019s acting without a slight loss of dignity.<\/span> However<\/span>, <\/span>there was nothing that lifted spirits more than the first sing-throug<\/span>h with the band.<\/p>\n

As we walked into the second (slightly warmer) rehearsal space to the sound of the band playing, every person in the cast had a huge grin on their face<\/span>– it was amazing to hear all the songs we\u2019d been listening to on bad Youtube recordings<\/span> come to life. <\/span>The band is always <\/span>spectacular<\/span> and <\/span>their performance in <\/span>\u2018Seussical\u2019 was no exception. Watching the percussion section is something that always baffles me<\/span>; <\/span>who knew it was possible to <\/span>involve<\/span> that many instruments, and ridiculous instruments at that<\/span>?! F<\/span>or example<\/span>, <\/span>th<\/span>ere was <\/span>a<\/span> bell that was <\/span>used <\/span>only <\/span>once in the show. And so, with morale officially boosted we went back to rehearsals.<\/span><\/p>\n

The First Run Through (AKA a complete and utter disaster)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Theatre people tend to call the first run of a show a \u2018stagger through\u2019<\/span>. However, <\/span>the first run of ‘Seussical’ was more like a crawl through<\/span>,<\/span> with it taking us <\/span>THREE<\/span> hours to complete the first\u00a0<\/span>act. Painful as it was, the <\/span>show was still beginning to <\/span>come together<\/span>– truly a sight to behold. Also, <\/span>with a plot line that consists of a boy who is put onto a dust speck, joins<\/span> <\/span>an<\/span> army who are fighting <\/span>over <\/span>the best<\/span> way to butter bread<\/span>, <\/span>and is found by an elephant, it was helpful to finally figure out <\/span>and <\/span>actually see<\/span> <\/span>what was going <\/span>on<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s Show Time! <\/span><\/h2>\n

Finally, after hours and hours (and hours and hours) of rehearsals it’s opening night. The se<\/span>t had been put up the previous day for the dress rehearsal, the reviewers were in and<\/span>,<\/span> we were ready and raring to go. It wasn\u2019t faultless by any means<\/span>– no show ever is-<\/span> but we\u2019d done it and it could only get better from there. By show 4 we were working like clockwork. By s<\/span>how 6, <\/span>there were prank<\/span>s; don\u2019t judge, <\/span>it was the Saturday <\/span>m<\/span>atinee and<\/span> we needed<\/span> to keep the energy u<\/span>p<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within no time it was the <\/span>final<\/span> performance<\/span>:<\/span> the biggest ticket seller and the one that everyone gives their all, and a l<\/span>ittle bit more<\/span>,<\/span> for. By the end of the run you\u2019ve forgotten about all the trials and tribulations of rehearsals<\/span> as <\/span>you\u2019re <\/span>so <\/span>happy and proud to be part of such a spectacle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Post Show Blues<\/span><\/h2>\n

Then, like a glorious birth after so many months or weeks of growing pains: it\u2019s all over. <\/span>It\u2019s a week after opening night and I find myself writing this article, perhaps in an attempt to feel like it\u2019s not over.<\/span> Either way, <\/span>I\u2019d rather be waiting backstage in a ridiculous costume than planning a summative any da<\/span>y. There really is nothing like performing and<\/span> DULOG do it so well. Can I do it all over <\/span>again<\/span><\/span>? Seriously – being apart of Durham University’s musical theatre is the most rewarding thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
