With award season in full swing, the 2018 BAFTA nominations have been announced!\u00a0 Here’s everything you need to know before watching the show.<\/p>\n

1. The announcement of the 2018 BAFTA nominations officially begin the 2018 UK awards season.<\/h2>\n

Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/em>star Natalie Dormer and\u00a0Avengers: Infinity War\u00a0<\/em>actress Letitia Wright announced the 2018 BAFTA nominations this morning at BAFTA’s London Piccadilly headquarters. These two lovely actresses read off the shortlist and it quickly went viral.<\/p>\n

2. Who is nominated?<\/h2>\n

Actors to watch this year are Annette Bening and Daniel Day-Lewis. Bening is up for Best Actress for her performance in\u00a0Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool<\/em>, which will be her 4th<\/sup> BAFTA nomination.\u00a0 Day-Lewis has ranked in his 7th<\/sup> nomination for his role in\u00a0Phantom Thread<\/em>.\u00a0 See the full list of nominees here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3. Films to watch.<\/h2>\n

Shape of Water\u00a0<\/em>is looking to steal the show with 12(!) nominations.\u00a0 Not far behind are\u00a0The Darkest Hour\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a03 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri<\/em>.\u00a0 Give these films a watch before the big night to stay up-to-date with all the hype!<\/p>\n

4. Once again… no female directors are recognised.<\/h2>\n

For the 5th<\/sup>\u00a0year in a row, we are seeing no females nominated for Best Director.\u00a0 There is a lot of discussion that Greta Gerwig deserved the best Director nomination for\u00a0Lady Bird<\/em>.\u00a0 Even though Lady Bird<\/em> won Best Film at the Golden Globes<\/a>\u00a0last Sunday, she was overlooked for Best Director there too.\u00a0 Looks like the BAFTA’s may need Natalie Portman to come call out the lack of female repesentation…<\/p>\n

5. What the hell does “BAFTA” even mean?<\/h2>\n

BAFTA stands for the British Academy of Film and Television arts.\u00a0 The BAFTA is a charity promoting and developing the creation of film and television within the UK.\u00a0 This will be the 71st<\/sup>\u00a0season the charity has held an award ceremony, and the 2018 BAFTA nominations are sure to make history.<\/p>\n

6. Move over Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley is hosting this year!<\/h2>\n

After 12 years of hosting, Stephen Fry is stepping down to let Joanna Lumley take the hosting throne this year.\u00a0\u00a0Joanna Lumley, most known for her role of Patsy Stone on BBC’s\u00a0Absolutely Famous<\/em>, will be the first female host since 2001.\u00a0 At 71, Lumley is still fit and fabulous, and we cannot WAIT to see her slay the hosting game.<\/p>\n

7. Give the people a voice!<\/h2>\n

Although the 2018 BAFTA nominees and winners are routinely chosen by the 6,500 BAFTA members, there is one award that the public gets to decide on: the EE Rising Star Award.\u00a0 The nominees this year are Daniel Kaluuya (favored to win), Josh O’Connor, Florence Pugh, Tessa Thomson, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, and Tessa Thomson.\u00a0 Vote here<\/a> for your favourite 2018 rising star!<\/p>\n

8. Where to watch.<\/h2>\n

The 71st annual BAFTA awards will be broadcasted on BBC One on the 18th<\/sup>\u00a0of February 2018.\u00a0 Those lucky enough to watch it live will be watching from London’s Royal Albert Hall, but don’t worry.\u00a0 If your invite got lost in the mail, you can watch cuddled up in bed from the BBC livestream<\/a> on your laptop or phone!<\/p>\n
