10 Throwback Songs To Seriously Liven Up Your 2019 Summer

Sometimes it's best to go back to the beginning - and your summer will thank you for it! Here are 10 throwback songs to seriously liven up your summer.

Summer 2019 has finally arrived, and it’s time to put your own tunes and dance! No summer would be complete without the ultimate playlist, and no playlist would be complete without the ultimate throwbacks. Here are 10 throwback songs to seriously liven up your summer!

1. Bad Romance by Lady Gaga

Can you believe this song is ten years old? We may currently know and love Lady Gaga as Ally Maine in A Star Is Born, but wind the clock back ten years and Lady Gaga was only just exploding onto our screens. Loved by millions from all walks of life, Mother Monster has provided us with classic after classic.

2. Timber by Pitbull feat. Kesha

Do you remember when Pitbull was everywhere in the music industry? A staple of the early 2010s, it seemed you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the goatee’d superstar saying ‘Dale’ on the radio. Kesha has stuck around, but with a new, authentic vibe that throws off the chains of her previous sound. If you’re want to reminisce on them both, then bring back your memories and play Timber loud.

3. Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus

Another artist that has embraced her genuine sound, Miley Cyrus has accompanied us on a musical journey throughout our lives. Now a successful superstar and accomplished actor in her own right, we’ve seen her find herself in real time. Her radical makeover in 2013 from Disney channel delight to short-haired twerking superstar sticking out her tongue was a moment that pop will never forget, but even longer-lasting is the legacy of her song ‘Party in the USA’. Also covered in 2012 by the film ‘Pitch Perfect’, this catchy tune is dead-set on never leaving our heads.

4. I Gotta Feeling by Black Eyed Peas

The first decade of the 21st century was undoubtedly dominated by the Black Eyed Peas, whose slick production, energising rap verses and vocal excellence ensured they were on every pop playlist going. Since going solo (again), the group have finished riding the wave of their peak fame – though will.i.am is still on our screens on The Voice – but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of their greatest hits.

5. A-Punk by Vampire Weekend

You’d know that guitar riff anywhere! This song put Vampire Weekend on the map and still proves to be a hit today. The slightly pared-back sound lets the lead instruments really shine, and the addition of flutes helps to flesh out this song and make it reach its full potential. A-Punk is a get-up-and-go song you need for your summer playlist.

6. We Found Love by Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna

Seven years have passed, but We Found Love is arguably one of Calvin Harris’ best-ever collaborations. Rihanna’s glossy vocals help to pack real emotion and feeling into this lyrically heart-wrenching song, and the melody is clever enough to stick in your head for days afterwards. Although they’ve collaborated since, We Found Love serves an extra dose of nostalgia to make your summer playlist even more euphoric.

7. Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars is a master pop chameleon: having gone from Michael Jackson impersonations as a child, to storming the world with honey-sweet love ballads; since then, he’s dabbled in 70s-style pop-funk and now coasts the charts as a pop/hip-hop superstar. Locked Out Of Heaven is one of his more energetic songs, filled with an anticipation that builds your excitement from the start. Jagged beats and passionate vocals combine to make a heady, explosive song that you’ll wish you hadn’t forgotten until now.

8. Mr. Brightside by The Killers

I love that this song is so adored a full fifteen years after its first release. Mr. Brightside is the one song to get everyone pumped, no matter what sort of event they’re attending – be it a club night, a drive about town, or a prom. The unmistakable riff and the unforgettable lyrics are just perfect to scream along to. This is one of the throwback songs that will never get old.

9. Paper Planes by M.I.A

The sheer confidence M.I.A exudes in this song should be an inspiration to everyone everywhere (though I wouldn’t follow the lyrics for instructions). Everything about this song screams summer – the high-pitched backing track, the chorus of backing vocals, and the self-assurance in the lyrics are a guaranteed win for any nostalgia song. Not to mention, the lyrics also consist of a few gestures so are super easy to learn – if you didn’t already learn them years ago, that is.

10. Crazy In Love by Beyonce feat. Jay-Z

Easily one of the most iconic song openings of all time, Crazy In Love still sits on its throne as a top hit of the entire century. Beyonce’s solo endeavours have undeniably earned her the title of the Queen of Pop, and it’s always a great time to take a trip down memory lane to see where her reign started. Bonus points if you can rap all of Jay-Z’s part too! One of the more classic throwback songs.
