If the big, wide world is ever overwhelming you, it’s probably about time to create a blanket fort. Shut out all that nastiness in favour of a cosy little nook with mood lighting, comfy pillows, and a Disney movie or two. If you want to create the blanket fort dreams are made of, then these tips should have that dishevelled blanket pile whipped into shape in no time. There are five pillars that need to be finessed in order to create the greatest blanket fort. Once you have mastered them, you’ll be reluctant to leave your snug spot.
It’s imperative that your blanket fort is established in the right area. You may be tempted to build it around the family TV, so you can catch re-runs of Adventure Time; however, taking up this valuable real estate may increase the likelihood of your parents or room-mate demanding your fort is bulldozed before it’s finished the end of its natural lifetime so that they can binge Game of Thrones, no doubt. Instead, make sure you choose an area that has lots of nearby tables and chairs to minimise the dragging you have to do during assembly. You could also opt for a nook that will allow you to use the support of structures already there for your lean-to.
This is possibly the most important aspect of blanket fort making. If you’re planning on living in a hovel of your own creation, it can’t be allowed to fall down. Shore up the walls of your fort with sturdy chairs, old boxes, or even wall hooks if you’re a regular fort constructer. Once the foundations are created, it’s time to drape your warmest blankets and sheets over the top. Or, cheat and use a tent indoors. You can even choose to still cover it in blankets to give your roommates the illusion of being a blanket fort extraordinaire.
It’s important to make your space unique through interior design. Hide all the jutting angles or chair legs with big, fluffy throw pillows. Make sure the designs are also mismatched, with loud conflicting prints to really make your blanket fort authentic. String lanterns and fairy lights inside and outside to get a soft, diffusing light.
If your blanket fort isn’t comfy, then you will have to re-make it until it is. Try laying down your doona or comforter on the floor to make it softer. If you’re cold, stock up on hot water bottles, or try switching out ordinary blankets for heated ones. Ensure the lighting isn’t so bright it hurts your eyes, and that the blanket fort is tall enough for you to sit up in without hitting your noggin on the ceiling. The blanket fort needs to accommodate you, not the other way around. Lastly, hide your favourite midnight snack stash inside the fort. It is a fort after all, so valuable supplies need to be stockpiled (also leaving your fort to go to the fridge is way too much effort).
If you’re planning on sticking in the fort for a while, you will need something to help you while away the hours. You could binge-read all of Harry Potter, or try to study your textbooks. Alternatively, re-purpose that stacks of books as foundations for the fort. Moreover, if you’re more into tech than books, bring in a Bluetooth speaker and laptop to keep you entertained with movies and video games. If you suck at computer games, then verse your pals (who have gained entry to the blanket fort) at board games. If you prefer keeping others out, then replace your friends with pets. Pets are always welcome in the blanket fort community.
