10 Products To Satisfy Your Black Food Trend Craving

Here’s another crazy trend in the world of food: black food! While you could totally opt for black food colouring to achieve moody looking food, plenty of products exist that already come in this dark hue. Do you want to get in on the trend and start making black food? Then here are 10 products to satisfy your black food trend craving.

1. Black Sesame

Black sesame is often sprinkled onto Japanese dishes, but this ingredient has actually been used to make black-hued ice cream for years. When used in desserts, black sesame imparts a sweet, earthy flavour and also adds a dark hue to your food.

2. Squid Ink

For savoury dishes that look goth, opt for some squid ink. Squid ink pasta and paella are super popular in Mediterranean cuisine as well as some Asian dishes. This imparts a brine-y flavour and makes your food as black as your soul.

3. Activated Charcoal

This might be the product that started the whole black food trend in the first place! Activated charcoal was formerly praised for its health benefits, but now is often used to colour food.

4. Black Seaweed

Here’s another naturally black ingredient that is used in Japanese cooking. If you’re looking to add some umami flavour to your dishes but still want them to be pitch black, try adding this ingredient.

5. Coconut Ash

Coconut ash is yet another product that took the world by storm after being used in the creation of black ice cream. You can purchase this in bulk to colour your food, or buy it for snacking in the form of bars and treats.

6. Espresso

Coffee is one of those things we’ve been having black for ages, so of course espresso had to be on this list. When used in larger amounts, coffee can be used to colour your desserts a dark hue. One example would be coffee jelly.

7. Liquorice

While this may be an acquired taste, liquorice is one of the things used to colour sweets and candies a totally black hue. If you’re looking to satisfy your black food trend craving, liquorice is easy enough to find in any supermarket.
