Tamworth is a tiny little blip right in the centre of the UK, no beach, no massive shopping centre, and no major museums, so why would you consider it for your next trip? Believe it or not, this rather unassuming town used to be Mercia, the capital of England under the rule of King Offa and there are plenty of spectacular attractions to keep you busy! Here are just a few reasons to visit Tamworth!
Possibly the biggest of the reasons to visit Tamworth is to see the magnificent castle that stands watch over the town centre. There has been a castle in that spot since 781 AD although it has been conquered and rebuilt many times in those years. You can take a tour around the castle to hear about the rest of its history and learn some of the ghost stories that surround the castle.
While it doesn’t have a large shopping centre, there is a large shopping district that includes stores like Next, New Look, and Smyths toys. It is definitely worth a trip while you are in town.
The NMA is a place of new life, created in remembrance of the fallen who passed protecting our country. It is a truly spiritual experience walking around in the beautiful garden. The main monument is breathtaking and it honours a lot of the people that have lost their lives on the battlefield since WW2.
An outdoor discovery centre and assault course. Learn about conservation whilst walking through beautiful parkland and take on the large obstacle course and gross mud walk. A great place for all ages, there is even a soft play area if you have kids!
An amazing amusement park with over 100 rides and attractions including Thomas land and a 15-acre zoo. Drayton Manor is a great way to spend a day, or even an entire weekend as there is a hotel and several restaurants on site!
Come and watch Tamworth football club play a match or two, the Tamworth supporters create a great vibe to join in with, especially on the rare occasions we are actually playing well!
In to your winter sports? The SnowDome has skiing, tobogganing, snowboarding, and more within its walls. A great place to go with the entire family or alone. There are classes for beginners, intermediate, and experts so you won’t have to struggle along with people at completely different levels.
There are some great places for picnics and walks in the Tamworth area like Kingsbury water park or Rosliston, both have kids play parks and beautiful wooded trails for you to get lost in.
Open all year round, Twycross is a conservation park with a wide array of animals like leopards and gibbons. There are even several different walkthroughs you can go into with some animals running free.
For a small-town, Tamworth has a pretty A class nightlife! There’s an amazing cocktail bar called Glow by the castle, a great bar with good music called The Penny Black, and of course the crowning jewel Atik/Vinyl the nightclub that everyone ends up at. There are so many other pubs with different vibes that everyone can find something they enjoy!
