5 Reasons It’s A Good Thing To Date Someone Different From You

Opposites attract. It is a cliché for a reason. My parents are like chalk and cheese and so are my Boyfriend and me, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Rather than differences tearing a couple apart, they can actually bring couples closer together, and learning to embrace and nurture your partner’s differences can create a long-lasting and very fulfilling relationship. Whereas dating someone too similar can lead to stagnancy, boredo, and clashes. Also, biologically speaking, we are attracted to opposites, and look to find someone whose differences can complete us – and who can argue with science? In light of these factors, below is a list of five reasons why it is a good thing to date someone different from you:

1. You complement one another.

If you are shy and introverted, then a partner who is loud and outspoken could be the perfect match for you. Such a partner is likely to bring you out of your shell and encourage you to be more outgoing and to socialise with other people more frequently. Likewise, you might help your partner to tone down certain aspects of their personality and to help them to listen to other people more. In this way, you will both help each other grow as individuals and help to improve each other’s weaknesses.

2. You challenge one another.

If you date someone who is completely different to you, you will inevitably challenge one another. Because you are so different, you will constantly discover new things about each other and be surprised in ways you never would have thought possible. This is because if someone is completely different to you, then you will find them hard to predict and you will constantly be kept on your toes. This can be extremely exciting and endearing as you won’t get bored of one another.

3. You will be exposed to new things.

The beauty of dating someone different to you is that they will introduce you to a wealth of new things that you might never have stumbled upon yourself. In this way you will learn from your partner, for example about new hobbies and interests such as music, food, places to visit. This will mean that again you will be challenged as you are pushed out of your comfort zone. In this way you will also experience more in life and become a more rounded person. For example, if they are religious, you might decide to convert to their religion and gain a totally new outlook on life.

4. Arguments will be resolved easier (in theory).

There is no denying it, every couple will argue during their relationship. The important thing is that you make up afterwards. If you date someone who is similar to you, it will probably take you longer to resolve conflicts, this is because you can be too similar in the way you handle things, for example you both might be stubborn and refuse to back down in an argument. However, if you are different, you are more likely to have different ways of dealing with conflict, one of you might like to argue, whereas the other might find it easier to back down. The overall process should technically run more smoothly as you strive to bring out the better personality traits in one another. In this way you will also teach one another how to compromise. This is one of the best reasons to date someone different from you.

5. There will be less rivalry.

If you are similar to someone you might often find yourself competing with them to be the best- this can also apply to relationships. If you are too similar to your partner (you might have met at work for example), then you might start comparing yourselves and this can lead to insecurity and also feelings of jealousy and resentment. However, if you are different to your partner then you won’t be able to compete with one another as much and instead, you will be able to offer your partner support in life and when they want to pursue their own personal goals.

So there you have it, a list of five reasons why it is a good thing to date someone different from you. Can you think of any more reasons why it’s good to date someone different from you? If so, then answer in the comment section below.
