1. Collect your ingredients

All you need to make mac in cheese in the microwave is your choice of pasta, water, salt, milk and cheese. The best cheeses to use for macaroni and cheese are a mix of cheddar and monterey jack, but feel free to add in any of your favourite cheeses, like mozzarella or even blue cheese. If you want to add in some extra flavours, dried mustard or chilli powder will add some depth.

2. Prepare your pasta

Combine your pasta, water and salt in a microwave safe bowl and stir until everything is combined. In case you’re making more than one portion, simply keep in mind that the pasta and water should be in a 1:1 ratio. This is a really important point on how to make mac and cheese in the microwave!

3. Microwave the pasta

Microwave your pasta in two minute intervals until it is cooked. Take the bowl out of the microwave and mix it through after two minutes. In total, you should do this about four times and for a total of eight minutes. If the water runs out before all the pasta is cooked, simply add more water and repeat the process.

4. Stir in the cheese and milk

Once the pasta is cooked, add in your cheese and milk and any of your extra flavours. Remember to grate all your cheeses beforehand, as these definitely won’t melt easily in huge blocks or chunks!

5. Microwave until cooked

Similar to cooking the pasta, you will need to microwave the mac and cheese mixture in intervals. This time around, microwave the dish for 30 seconds at a time. At the end of each interval, take the bowl out and mix all the ingredients through. The mac and cheese should be complete after 1.5 minutes. If you want a creamier sauce, add in more milk and cheese.

6. Eat!

Now sit back and enjoy your dish! If you’re not planning to have it all at once, it can be easily reheated by adding a splash of milk.
